The Community Researcher will play a key role in supporting the preparation of cultural and language-based educational materials for the Biskaabiiyaang Indigenous Metaverse, a community-driven initiative that supports Anishinaabe cultural resurgence through immersive digital storytelling, language learning, and community healing practices. The Community Researcher will be working with Dr. Maya Chacaby (York University Project Lead), community Elders, and the Biskaabiiyaang team at both York University and Nokiiwin Tribal Council.
This term-based role will focus on editing, formatting, and metadata tagging of William Jones' traditional stories into a readable, line-by-line format for integration into the metaverse learning environment. The William Jones Collection is an archive of Traditional stories from the Thunder Bay region documented in 1906. It is the largest archive of Traditional Stories from the region. The Community Researcher will help ensure that Anishinaabe narratives are shared in an accessible, respectful, and culturally authentic way.
Key Responsibilities
· Edit and format William Jones stories into readable, line-by-line layout
· Ensure consistency without orthographic reformatting or linguistic restructuring
· Metadata tagging of the stories (no experience necessary)
· Research and reformat orthography (spelling system) in the Jones collection to best reflect community preferences.
· Support qualitative data preparation and knowledge mobilization
· Collaborate with the project team to meet standards and timelines
Qualifications
· Strong attention to detail and interest in cultural storytelling
· Ability to follow formatting guidelines and work independently
· Respect for Indigenous knowledge systems and community protocols
· Ability to work remotely (Zoom)
· Proficient Knowledge of Microsoft Word (and/or Pages), Zoom, Excel (and/or Numbers), and familiarity with cloud-based file sharing.
Work Environment
· Remote work possible with regular virtual check-ins
· Flexible hours within the term schedule
· Occasional online meetings with project team
