As the Safety Codes Officer - Plumbing and Gas, you will participate in an internal training program in plans examination/inspection procedures, enforcement, prosecution and administrative policies as required. Primary duties include:

  • Enforce the Safety Codes Act and all related codes, bylaws and regulations.
  • Respond to plumbing and gas codes, and mechanical code inquiries.
  • Review building plans including but not limited to mechanical plans, mechanical trades permit plans, and plumbing and gas plans; inspect construction for compliance with all codes and related by-laws.
  • Prepare Safety Codes Officer's notices and follow up with building contractors, owners or applicants.
  • Maintain accurate records of plans inspections. Investigate complaints, take the necessary action and document that action.
  • Gather evidence and prepare files for possible prosecution.
  • Attend Court and Safety Codes Council hearings and give evidence as required.
  • Document inspections for permit issuance and the mobile computing system using the Public One Stop Service Experience (POSSE) software.

Qualifications

  • A completed Journeyperson certificate as a Plumber and First Class Gasfitter or Second Class Gasfitter recognized by Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training plus at least 5 years relevant experience as a Journeyperson.
  • A Certificate of Competency issued by the Safety Codes Council in both the Plumbing and Gas Group A disciplines must be obtained within 5 months from the date of hire.
  • The Safety Codes Council may produce code updates and other courses which all Safety Codes Officers are required to complete successfully within 6 months from the date of hire.
  • A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalent), with no more than 6 demerits and no current suspensions or charges pending OR; a valid Graduated Driver's License (GDL) with no more than 4 demerits and no current suspensions or charges pending.
  • The ability to obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit within 2 months from the date of hire.
  • Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook) and willingness to learn Public One Stop Service Experience software.
  • Strong communication, planning and organizational skills; demonstrated accuracy and analytical skills; and the ability to work independently and in a team environment.

Pre-employment Requirements

  • A security clearance will be conducted.
  • Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.

Pre-employment Drug Test: An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test. This test assesses for use of drugs including cannabis. Failure to pass a pre-employment drug test may prevent an applicant from being hired into any safety sensitive position for a period of up to twelve months.
