SD 8 Trades Sampler Teacher

The District Trades Sampler Teacher is a 1.0 FTE (second semester) position within the Innovative Learning department. Reporting to the Director of Instruction – Innovative Learning (or designate), this teacher supervises a cohort of students for the second semester Trades Sampler program based out of Salmo Secondary and Selkirk College (Silverking). Position includes a teaching component in February and June for a career, academic, and either Work Experience 11/12 or a technology education IDS (Independent Directed Study). Embedded duties include check-ins with Selkirk College Youth Train in Trades (YTT) students while on site and promoting YTT program pathways to students.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Program Coordination
Coordinate and deliver the District Trades Sampler Program in alignment with SD8's strategic priorities, the Career Development Continuous Learning Report, and Ministry of Education and Child Care policy.
Collaborate with school counsellors, administrators, and the Director of Instruction Innovative Learning (or designate) to ensure student success.
Promote awareness of the Trades Sampler and Youth Train in Trades (YTT) programs
Support student trades training plans, ensuring alignment with student career and graduation pathway plans.
Foster inclusive and barrier-free access to the program for Indigenous learners, students with disabilities/diverse abilities, and youth in care.
Liaise with Selkirk College to ensure ongoing program relevance and student transition support.
Instruction and Student Supervision
Provide direct instruction aligned with trades curriculum and career education outcomes during designated teaching days (Monday or as scheduled).
Supervise and support students during Trades Sampler program hours (Tuesday to Friday) at Selkirk College.
Ensure student engagement, safety, and mentorship during hands-on experiential learning activities across multiple trades sectors.
Conduct regular student check-ins at Selkirk College to support Youth Train in Trades participants and maintain active communication with instructors and support staff.
Facilitate reflection, goal setting, and progress reviews aligned with students' Career-Life Connections and trades training pathways.
Monitoring & Accountability
Enter students into the DCMS system to ensure funding compliance with the SD8 and Skilled Trades BC funding agreement.
Maintain accurate documentation for Ministry 1701 data reporting, dual credit funding, and trades scholarships.
Ensure compliance with WorkSafeBC safety protocols, Ministry-authorized safety guidelines, and district procedures for off-site learning.
Collect and submit data aligned with SD8's Career Development reporting cycles and support continuous improvement efforts.

Schedule
Mondays – teach relevant curriculum (academic, safety, and career)
Tuesdays – Fridays (February until end of May) supervise students at Selkirk College
Mondays-Fridays (end of May until end of June) school-based curriculum or supervision of work experience
Travel between school site and college is required. Schedule may be refined as determined with Selkirk College Trades Sampler program requirements.
Minimum academic qualifications/experience:
a) Professional teaching certificate as recognized by the BC Ministry of Education and Child Care
b) Red seal qualification or technology education experience preferred
d) Exemplary leadership, interpersonal, organizational and consultation skills
e) Possession of a current valid BC Driver's License or reliable means of travel between sites
Preferred qualifications/experience:
a) Five years of school-based teaching which includes a minimum of two years classroom experience in a career and trades program
b) Master of Education Degree or equivalent with minimum course work in the area of specified responsibility;
c) Extensive local and provincial knowledge of trades and career programs and current issues in delivery of service;
Reporting structure:
The District Trades Technology & Careers Transitions Teacher Coordinator is accountable to the Director of Instruction of Innovative Learning with direct supervision under the District Principal of Innovative Learning Services.

Salary Range; $63,367 – $111,488 per year, in accordance with the current SD8–Kootenay Lake / KLTF Collective Agreement. Placement on the salary grid is based on qualifications and years of teaching experience as evaluated by the BC Teacher Qualification Service (TQS).
