Charlottetown PE CA P University of Prince Edward Island Full time

Inquiry Studies will run a Winter 2026 pilot examining how large-cohort, Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL) can be sustained through expanded mentorship, redesigned learning scaffolds, and strengthened peer-to-peer support. The course remains anchored by The Curiosity Project (MacKinnon, 2017), in which learners develop and pursue self-directed questions across disciplines, while this iteration tests new structures for supporting that work at scale. The pilot seeks to:

  • assess which pedagogical supports most effectively sustain curiosity-driven research in larger cohorts
  • extend inquiry beyond the classroom through purposeful civic and community engagement
  • examine how learners grapple with contemporary "wicked problems," including those shaped by advancements in AI and other transformative technologies.

The Student Assistant will work closely with the instructor to support students' inquiry processes, facilitate small- and large-group learning, provide formative feedback, and help sustain the collaborative learning environment central to Inquiry Studies. The role balances direct student support with attentiveness to how IBL functions at scale, contributing meaningfully to ongoing research and program development.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Attend all scheduled class meetings (Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4–5:15 p.m.) in a range of mentorship and IBL facilitation roles
  • Participate in a weekly planning meeting with the instructor to support coordination, preparation, and reflective adjustment of course activities
  • Monitor and engage with students on Moodle discussion forums, offering clarifying questions, feedback, and encouragement as Curiosity Projects evolve
  • Provide individualized academic support to learners, including guidance on refining research questions, identifying credible sources, planning project workflows, and reflecting on inquiry processes
  • Support peer-to-peer learning and help sustain a respectful, collaborative learning environment that encourages experimentation, iteration, and metacognition
  • Assist the instructor in developing, adapting, or refining IBL activities and course structures appropriate to a large-cohort learning model
  • Contribute to the documentation of observations and insights from the pilot to support ongoing curriculum development and program planning within the Faculty of Arts

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be a current UPEI student
  • Demonstrated comfort working across disciplinary boundaries
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to offer clear, empathetic, learner-centred feedback
  • Experience with collaborative learning, peer mentorship, or facilitation in academic or community contexts
  • Adaptability and ease working in dynamic learning environments where plans evolve and students' needs shift
  • An understanding of (or willingness to learn) Inquiry-Based Learning in Higher Education (IBL-HE) principles, including modelling a curiosity mindset, embracing uncertainty, scaffolding student work, and supporting reflective practice
  • Reliability, collegiality, and the ability to take initiative in fast-paced workshop settings
  • Successful completion of UPEI 1020 Inquiry Studies or prior experience with independent research, creative problem-solving, and project-based learning is considered an asset

Priority will be given to University of Prince Edward Island students in accordance with Recruitment, Selection, Hiring and Employment Policies and the Procedures manual.
