Summary:
As R&D Engineering Manager, you will report directly to the Chief Technology Officer and closely collaborate with cross-functional teams in Engineering, Operations, and Product Management. You will oversee one or more research and development programs involving hardware, firmware, and software for real-time embedded life safety and building technology systems.
Your key focus will be driving new product initiatives while supporting the adoption and maintenance of existing offerings. The ideal candidate excels at navigating fast-paced New Product Introduction (NPI) roadmaps, guiding and reprioritizing team activities, and effectively managing resources. You will leverage strong customer insight, resolve resource challenges, and partner with customer-facing teams to ensure R&D activities align with market needs, while fostering a flexible and growth-oriented environment at Mircom.
This full-time, on-site position is located at Mircom's Vaughan, Ontario headquarters, offering convenient access to major highways and public transit. Limited travel may be required for client meetings and product reviews.
Key Responsibilities:- Work with the R&D Engineering team to schedule, validate, and package for delivery new features and product enhancements
- Interact with QA to validate R&D activities
- Collaborate with Product Management to prioritize backlog and assign resources appropriately
- Translate field feedback into clear engineering requirements and manage/prioritize team activities
- Manage stakeholder expectations throughout the development process
- Test and evaluate hardware and software for new and upgraded products and systems as part of the Engineering Department's testing and quality assurance process
- Review and sign off on the work activities of the team
- Provide development support, guidance, and mentorship to team members
- Ensure team members have appropriate learning and development plans to grow their skills
- Identify and escalate risks and challenges to milestone completion as needed
- Serve as a primary point of contact to mitigate issues and find solutions as they arise
Requirements and Skills:
- Bachelor's degree (or higher) in electrical engineering or a related field
- Five or more years' experience as a product designer or developer
- Experience with real-time embedded systems
- Technical ability to communicate with Hardware, Software, and Mechanical designers
- Ability to communicate effectively with executive leadership
- Financial acumen, including budgets, forecasts, P&L, and product roadmaps
- Familiarity with electrical codes and certification/compliance standards (NFPA 72, NBC, UL, ULC, etc.)
- Project management experience: planning, execution, budgeting, scheduling
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills
- Proven leadership capabilities managing engineering and design teams
- Effective collaboration and organizational skills, including written/oral communication and documentation
