Position Summary

The Senior Accountant reports directly to the Financial Controller and plays a key role in supporting both day-to-day accounting operations and financial analysis activities. In addition to core accounting responsibilities, this role focuses on
cost accounting, inventory analysis, and margin analysis
, providing insights to support operational and management decision-making. The position works closely with operations, supply chain, and finance to improve cost visibility, data accuracy, and process efficiency.

Job Responsibilities

Core Accounting Responsibilities

  • Support day-to-day accounting operations including AP, AR, journal entries, and bank reconciliations
  • Assist with month-end and year-end close processes, including preparation of schedules and reconciliations
  • Maintain general ledger accuracy and supporting schedules
  • Reconcile balance sheet and income statement accounts and prepare adjusting entries
  • Support payroll postings and employee expense tracking
  • Ensure compliance with internal controls and accounting policies

Cost Accounting & Analysis Focus

  • Assist with inventory reconciliation, valuation, and variance analysis
  • Perform cost analysis related to materials, labor, overhead, and production variances
  • Support standard cost maintenance and periodic cost updates
  • Analyze gross margin by product, customer, and channel, and investigate variances
  • Partner with operations to understand production drivers and identify cost-saving opportunities
  • Prepare analytical reports to support budgeting, forecasting, and management reviews

Collaboration & Process Improvement

  • Work cross-functionally with operations, supply chain, and sales to resolve accounting and cost-related issues
  • Help improve data integrity, reporting efficiency, and ERP utilization
  • Provide ad hoc financial analysis and coverage support during team absences

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance (Accounting strongly preferred)
  • Minimum 3-7 years of accounting experience, preferably in a manufacturing or inventory-based environment
  • Strong analytical mindset with the ability to interpret financial and operational data
  • Solid understanding of Canadian accounting standards (ASPE)
  • Experience with cost accounting concepts (standard costing, variance analysis, inventory valuation) is strongly preferred
  • Proficiency with ERP systems (Business Central experience is a strong asset)
  • Advanced Excel skills; ability to work with large data sets
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating across functions
  • CPA designation or progress toward CPA is an asset
