Position Summary
The Senior Accountant reports directly to the Financial Controller and plays a key role in supporting both day-to-day accounting operations and financial analysis activities. In addition to core accounting responsibilities, this role focuses on
cost accounting, inventory analysis, and margin analysis
, providing insights to support operational and management decision-making. The position works closely with operations, supply chain, and finance to improve cost visibility, data accuracy, and process efficiency.
Job Responsibilities
Core Accounting Responsibilities
- Support day-to-day accounting operations including AP, AR, journal entries, and bank reconciliations
- Assist with month-end and year-end close processes, including preparation of schedules and reconciliations
- Maintain general ledger accuracy and supporting schedules
- Reconcile balance sheet and income statement accounts and prepare adjusting entries
- Support payroll postings and employee expense tracking
- Ensure compliance with internal controls and accounting policies
Cost Accounting & Analysis Focus
- Assist with inventory reconciliation, valuation, and variance analysis
- Perform cost analysis related to materials, labor, overhead, and production variances
- Support standard cost maintenance and periodic cost updates
- Analyze gross margin by product, customer, and channel, and investigate variances
- Partner with operations to understand production drivers and identify cost-saving opportunities
- Prepare analytical reports to support budgeting, forecasting, and management reviews
Collaboration & Process Improvement
- Work cross-functionally with operations, supply chain, and sales to resolve accounting and cost-related issues
- Help improve data integrity, reporting efficiency, and ERP utilization
- Provide ad hoc financial analysis and coverage support during team absences
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance (Accounting strongly preferred)
- Minimum 3-7 years of accounting experience, preferably in a manufacturing or inventory-based environment
- Strong analytical mindset with the ability to interpret financial and operational data
- Solid understanding of Canadian accounting standards (ASPE)
- Experience with cost accounting concepts (standard costing, variance analysis, inventory valuation) is strongly preferred
- Proficiency with ERP systems (Business Central experience is a strong asset)
- Advanced Excel skills; ability to work with large data sets
- Strong attention to detail, organization, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently while collaborating across functions
- CPA designation or progress toward CPA is an asset
