The Mikisew Cree First Nation (Mikisew) has lived on the ancestral lands of the Athabasca Delta and Wood Buffalo National Park in northeastern Alberta since time immemorial. The lives of our members are linked to the land and to a close understanding of traditions, history and a natural way of life. Many of our members live in the hamlet of Fort Chipewyan, and our traditional lands range over a large portion of Athabasca oil sands deposits. Who You Are

Reporting to the Environmental Manager, the Environment Coordinator is responsible for coordinating and managing environmental issues and concerns affecting the Mikisew Cree First Nation (MCFN) and its traditional lands. This includes reviewing regulatory applications, government initiatives, industry agreements, environmental action plans, community engagement, and supporting the broader goals of the Government & Industry Relations (GIR) Department. The ideal candidate is analytical, highly organized, experienced in environmental policy and assessment, and able to build strong working relationships with government, industry, and the community.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and manage environmental issues affecting MCFN and its traditional lands.
  • Administer the Environmental Program in alignment with GIR policies, plans, and budgets.
  • Review and analyze technical, regulatory, and industry documents; ensure MCFN concerns are reflected.
  • Manage third-party consultants, including scopes of work and RFPs.
  • Participate in regulatory applications, hearings, and environmental assessments.
  • Develop and submit funding proposals and grants for environmental projects.
  • Implement and monitor environmental agreements with industry proponents; identify mitigation measures.
  • Collect, analyze, and report on environmental data to support policy and decision-making.
  • Engage with MCFN Leadership, Elders, and community members on environmental issues and programs.
  • Liaise with industry, government, and other First Nations to represent MCFN interests.
  • Support GIR team with reports, summaries, presentations, and communication materials.
  • Contribute to annual GIR work plans, community events, newsletters, and other outreach initiatives.
  • Maintain confidential program and project records; provide timely updates to senior leadership.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Natural Resource Management, or related field (required).
  • 2–3 years of experience in environmental assessments, First Nations environmental issues, or policy/program management.
  • Experience working with legislation, regulations, and environmental assessment processes.
  • Strong research, analysis, statistical interpretation, and policy evaluation skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for reports, proposals, and presentations.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and consensus-building abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively under time pressure.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build effective relationships.
  • Time-management skills with the ability to manage shifting priorities.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous, Aboriginal, and First Nations Acts and related social, economic, political, and historical issues.
  • Cultural competency and sensitivity to Mikisew Cree First Nation traditions.
  • Experience using MS Office, Adobe Acrobat, and data/statistical analysis tools.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.
  • Project Management training or PMP designation (asset).

Other Requirements

  • Possess a valid Class 5 AB driver's license and own or access to a vehicle.
  • Willingness and ability to travel as required by business needs.
  • Willingness and ability to work after hours and/or weekends when required.
  • Willingness to submit to an Oath of Confidentiality.
  • Willing to work flexible schedule. Combination of working remotely, in-office, and at community locations.
  • Must provide and possess a clear criminal record vulnerable sector check.
  • Ability to speak and/or understand the Cree language (or another applicable First Nation language) would be an asset but not required
