Duties

Help

Performs custodial/janitorial duties:

  • Cleaning, sanitizing, emptying trash, and restocking public restrooms.
  • Cleaning, vacuuming, dusting, emptying trash and recyclables.
  • Scrubs, strips, waxes and polishes floors using heavy (industrial type) power scrubber and buffer.
  • Washes walls using powered wall washing machines and/or by hand.
  • Vacuums/cleans rugs, carpets, etc. using heavy vacuum cleaner.
  • Adjusts, cleans, and oils these machines and changes brushes, rollers, buffers, and other attachments.
  • Moves heavy furniture, supplies, and equipment.
  • Occasionally works on ladders and scaffolds to change light bulbs, wash walls, etc.
  • Keeps shop areas clean and in order.
  • Sweeps and wet mops floor and removes various liquid and solid wastes, spills, etc.
  • On a regular and recurring basis operates light duty motor vehicles weighing up to 10,000 pounds (such as pick-up trucks, flatbed trucks, 5-yard dump trucks, etc.) to transport personnel, material, or equipment to work site located in the park.

Career-Seasonal positions and subject to release and recall procedures. A permanent career-seasonal positions includes all the benefits of permanent employment but does not provide employment on a full year-round basis. As such, selectees will be in a
non-pay/non-duty status for at least 2 weeks to 6 months per year based on project requirements or weather conditions.
Selectees are guaranteed to work at least 6 months per year but not more than 50 weeks per year, with the work schedule to be determined upon appointment.
**Non-pay status varies upon position which will be set at 1 pay period.

Position number 308 - non-pay anticipated from beginning of November to mid-November.

Position number 345 - non-pay anticipated from mid-November to end of November.

Position number 347 - non-pay anticipated from end of November to mid-December.

Yosemite National Park, California, known worldwide for its spectacular natural beauty is the backdrop for this position. Sitting astride the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the park covers 1,182 square miles of varied wilderness ecosystems, from river valleys to alpine meadows to lofty 13,000-foot-high peaks. Yosemite Valley is located 208 miles from San Francisco, 81 miles from Merced, and 94 miles from Fresno. Shopping, medical, postal and laundry services are available in the park. Elevation at the Valley floor is approximately 4,000 feet and 2,200 feet in El Portal. The park is open year-round with the majority of activities occurring during the busy season March through October.   • You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.
  • There is no government housing available for these positions.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 5 nights per month for training. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
  • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a 1 year probationary period during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated.

A relocation incentive is not the same as a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move and, as such, may be granted in conjunction with one another.

Physical Demands:
Moderately heavy physical effort is required when: using ladder and scaffolds to clean walls, ceilings, windows, ceilings fixtures; operating powered equipment; removing cans of or other containers of trash; and occasionally lifts objects weighing over 50 pounds.

Working Conditions:
Usually works indoors in areas, which normally have adequate heat, light, and ventilation. Is exposed to vibration from heavy equipment and to skin irritations from strong cleaning solutions used in stripping floors. Care is required to avoid serious injuries when working on ladders and scaffolds and when using heavy powered equipment. Occasionally works outdoors in possible inclement weather conditions and/or extreme temperatures.

The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework only during an emergency or natural disaster.
