We are currently seeking an experienced Senior Wills & Estates Law Clerk to join our growing team in Mississauga. This role is ideal for a confident, detail-oriented professional who enjoys managing files independently and contributing meaningfully to client outcomes.
The Role
This is a senior, hands-on position for a Law Clerk with 5+ years of Ontario Wills & Estates experience. The successful candidate will take ownership of files, work closely with lawyers, and play a key role in both estate planning and estate administration matters.
Key Responsibilities
Estate Planning
- Draft Wills, Trusts, and Powers of Attorney
- Attend client meetings, take instructions, and follow up as needed
- Correspond with clients and review draft documents
- Manage and maintain the firm's Wills Vault
- Research interesting and relevant topics that arise
- Continued paid education in taxation, probate, and other areas of law relevant to estate planning
Estate Administration
- Prepare Applications for Certificates of Appointment of Estate Trustee
- Gather and organize estate asset and liability information
- Communicate with financial institutions, CRA, executors, beneficiaries, accountants, and advisors
- Manage advertising for creditors
- Prepare estate accounts, releases, receipts, and related documentation
- Prepare and file Estate Information Returns
Follow up with our connections at the Estates Court
Practice Support
- Track timelines, task lists, and ongoing record-keeping
- Organize and attend document execution meetings
- Meet regularly with lawyers to review file status
- Stay current on legislative and procedural changes in Wills & Estates
- Assist with correspondence, billing and scheduling as needed
Qualifications
- Minimum 5+ years' experience as a Wills & Estates Law Clerk in Ontario
- Strong understanding of Ontario Wills, Estates, and Trust law
- Ability to manage files independently with minimal supervision
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and legal software (including CLIO and Estate-a-Base)
- Experience with family law, taxation, or real estate is an asset
