Toronto, Ontario, Canada Carbon Technologies Inc. Full time $120,000 - $180,000 per year

WHAT WE DO

We're building a home robot that handles cooking, cleaning, and laundry—appliances for the age of autonomy. Our team of engineers and product designers is based in downtown Toronto.

THE OPPORTUNITY

We're hiring a
Senior Mechanism Design Engineer
to own core mechanisms for our humanoid-style robot—
hand, arm, and mobility systems
. You'll lead kinematic architecture, transmissions, and compliance strategies from concept through production, working tightly with controls, perception, and manufacturing to ship reliable, elegant, serviceable hardware.

DAY TO DAY

  • Own kinematics & architecture:
define DOF, workspace, link lengths, joint types, and transmission choices for hands, arms, and the lower-body/mobility module.
  • Design transmissions:
tendon/cable drives, linkages, geared/cycloidal/harmonic reductions, differential drives, clutches/brakes, backdrivable stages, and torque paths.
  • Engineer compliance & gravity comp:
cams, springs, flexures, parallel/4-bar linkages, series elastic elements; tune for safety, force control, and energy efficiency.
  • Prototype fast:
CAD → 3D print → machine → bench test; build jigs, test rigs, and characterization fixtures for torque, backlash, stiffness, efficiency, and durability.
  • Analyze & iterate:
FEA, tolerance stacks, friction models, wear life, heat, NVH; convert results into simple, robust mechanisms that can be assembled repeatedly.
  • Integrate actuators & sensors:
BLDC/servo selection, reducers, encoders/force/pressure sensors, cabling/looming, connectors, and service access.
  • DFM/DFA with vendors:
material/process selection (machining, MJF/SLS, die casting, metal injection molding, sheet/formed parts), drawings, GD&T, and build instructions.
  • Work across disciplines:
partner with controls for impedance/force control, with perception/planning for task envelopes, and with industrial design for packaging.
  • Own reliability:
define test plans (life, drop, dust/water ingress for relevant subsystems), failure analysis, and corrective design actions.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • 7+ years
in mechanism design for robots, automation, or complex mechatronic products (humanoid or manipulator experience strongly preferred).
  • Deep command of
    kinematics, statics/dynamics
, transmissions, compliance, friction/wear, and practical tolerance design.
  • Fluency in
    CAD
     (Siemens NX),
    FEA
     for structures and compliance, and
    GD&T
     on production drawings.
  • Hands-on prototyping skill—comfortable at a bench with calipers, taps, fixtures, and test rigs; fast at turning rough ideas into proof.
  • Demonstrated track record shipping robust, serviceabl
    e
mechanisms at scale or in demanding prototypes with meaningful field time.
  • Clear communicator; can defend design tradeoffs with data and collaborate tightly with controls, firmware, and manufacturing.

OTHER SKILLS

  • Underactuated or adaptive
    robot hands/grippers
; series elastic or differential mechanisms; cable/tendon routing and serviceability.
  • Cycloidal/harmonic
reducer experience; backdrivability and safety mechanisms.
  • Soft contact
design for household tasks (grip surfaces, compliance, contamination control).
  • Reliability engineering
: HALT/HASS, life modeling, and failure analysis.
  • Experience bringing mechanisms from
    EVT → DVT → PVT
     with suppliers.

HOW WE WORK

  • On-site in
    Toronto
     (hardware first).
  • Fast, iterative builds; rigorous test loops; simple mechanisms that survive the real world.
  • High bar, low ego, clear ownership.
