Location:
Toronto, ON (On-site)
About Us
Sapir Robotics (formerly Carbon Technologies) is developing a next-generation robot designed to perform real household tasks—cleaning, cooking, and organizing—with practical mobility and purposeful dexterity.
Role Overview
We are seeking a
Lead Mechanical Engineer
to own the full mechanical architecture of our home robot — from concept to production — while maintaining deep technical leadership in mechanism design. You will bridge conceptual design, precision actuation, and scalable manufacturability, ensuring the robot's core systems achieve exceptional performance within strict size, weight, and cost targets.
This role is highly hands-on. You'll design, prototype, and validate mechanisms yourself, while also leading a small team and collaborating closely with electrical, controls, and industrial design engineers.
Key Responsibilities
- Own full mechanical system design: structure, actuation, joints, transmissions, and mobility modules.
- Design and optimize compact, high-efficiency mechanisms for arms, end-effectors, and mobility (wheeled and articulated).
- Integrate electromechanical subsystems (motors, encoders, sensors, wiring) into robust, manufacturable assemblies.
- Lead mechanical architecture decisions for performance, safety, serviceability, and mass production.
- Oversee DFM/DFA processes, supplier coordination, and tolerance analysis for high-volume production.
- Conduct mechanical simulations (FEA, motion, thermal, vibration) to validate design robustness.
- Collaborate with the control and firmware teams to co-design mechanical and actuation interfaces.
- Manage mechanical documentation, part libraries, and design standards across the company.
- Mentor junior mechanical and mechatronic engineers in mechanism design and precision engineering.
Required Experience
- 5–10 years of mechanical design experience, with at least 3 years focused on robotics, automation, or precision mechanisms.
- Proven expertise in
mechanism design
, including linkages, gear trains, belt drives, linear and rotary actuators, and compliant mechanisms. - Strong proficiency in CAD (SolidWorks, NX, or Fusion 360), GD&T, and tolerance stack-ups.
- Deep understanding of materials, manufacturing processes (CNC, injection molding, sheet metal, additive), and assembly constraints.
- Hands-on prototyping and testing experience with mechatronic systems.
- Experience integrating with electrical, controls, and industrial design teams.
- Knowledge of gear reduction methods (harmonic drives, planetary, cycloidal, or custom gear trains).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with an obsession for reliability and simplicity.
Preferred
- Experience designing compact actuation systems for humanoid or mobile robots.
- Familiarity with lightweight structural design, kinematic analysis, and motion optimization.
- Background in thermal management, cable routing, or sealing for consumer-grade robotics.
- Prior startup experience or end-to-end ownership of a hardware product.
Why Join
- You'll be leading mechanical engineering at one of the most ambitious robotics startups in Canada, helping create the first truly practical robot. You'll work directly with the founder and founding team, and have real influence over the robot's mechanical DNA — its form, motion, and feel.
