**Women & Family Services Advocate/Crisis Counsellor**

**Canada Summer Jobs, 8 Week Contract**

We are seeking a **Women & Family Services Advocate/Crisis Counsellor** to join our team. This is an **8 Week, Full Time Contract** which has been funded through the Government of Canada, Canada Summer Jobs Program.

**ABOUT US**

At HWS, we use a gender-based analysis (GBA+), trauma and violence informed framework to deliver prevention, education, crisis support and healing programs to women and their families who have been impacted by GBV in rural Huron County. Our services include a 24-hour helpline and emergency shelter, risk assessment and safety planning, advocacy, system navigation, individual and group healing opportunities, and community development.

**JOB PURPOSE**

Reporting to the Manager of Programs and working within the Women and Family Services Team, Advocates support women+ and their children’s safe entry into Emergency Shelter, create a safe and supportive environment to explore options, information and resources, and develop a Care Plan for women+ and families impacted by GBV.

**DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Facilitates intake into Emergency Shelter, including a comprehensive and individualized risk assessment, and develops safety plans for women+ and their children
- Actively works with clients to create and continue their individualized Care Plan detailing their goals and next steps
- Provides advocacy, resources and information, including referrals to other appropriate supports
- Facilitates Shelter programming including weekly House Meetings, group meals, educational groups, etc.
- Maintains client files and documentation according to HWS policies

**WHAT YOU BRING TO THE ROLE**:

- Demonstrates a strong GBA+, and an understanding of trauma and violence informed care.
- Experience in supporting women and their families impacted by GBV
- Experience working in Emergency Shelters and on a Crisis Line
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to facilitate courageous conversations
- Demonstrates strong advocacy skills and effective person-centered service delivery
- Effectively facilitate relationships across sectors and foster collaboration
- Ability to work independently as well as within a team with mínimal supervision
- Strong administrative, organizational, and written communication skills
- Valid driver’s license; access to a reliable vehicle and proof of adequate insurance
- Clean driver’s abstract; clear current Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC)
- CPR, First Aid (ASIST, CPI an asset)

**REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS**

**This position is funded by the Canada Summer Jobs Program. To be eligible, youth must**:

- Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period.
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; and,
- Be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations
- Completion of, or working towards the completion of, post-secondary education in a Humanities field (i.e. - Social Work, Assaulted Women and Children Counsellor and Advocate, Child and Youth Worker, Women and Gender Studies, etc.)
- Preference will be given to education or experience obtained in a GBV/Women’s Sector field.
- Fluency in other languages an asset.

**PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS**
- Ability to lift 25 lbs.

**LOCATION AND HOURS OF WORK**

This is an in-person position will require the incumbent to work primarily at our Administrative and Shelter location, located at 376 Huron Road, Goderich, ON.

The hours for this position are 35 hours a week and may be required to work a variable of day, evening and weekend hours to support program and agency needs. This is an 8-week contract with an hourly wage of $19.50.
