POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Pay Equity Representative promotes the values, principles, and services of the SEIU and is responsible for performing a variety of pay equity functions for the Local, including collecting and analyzing wage data, negotiating with employers regarding the pay equity process, facilitating the job evaluation process, and acting as a member of all job evaluation committees.
The position holder will report to the Director, Research, and work in close coordination with Union Reps, Clerical Staff, Researchers, and their assigned sector managers. This position will communicate with SEIU leadership on an as needed basis to respond to research requests.
This position is full-time working at our Head Office in Richmond Hill, Ontario.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Act as a member of all job evaluation committees (including overseeing data collection, ratings jobs, negotiating ratings with Employer representatives, reviewing ratings to ensure that they are appropriate, and preparing and facilitating pay equity reconsideration process).
- Negotiate with Employer Committees regarding issues such as Terms of Reference, the use of SEIU GNCS, and committee processes.
- Negotiate and sign off on pay equity plans (including negotiating retroactivity, banding, proportional value calculations, and male comparators, etc) with approval of Pay Equity Counsel
- Create pay equity training materials. Selecting and training members for job evaluation committees
- Collect wage and pay equity data, building and populating excel spreadsheets to calculate wage gaps
- Review existing pay equity plans to ensure completeness and compliance with Pay Equity Act
- Maintain the internal pay equity library and database including documenting all meeting notes, rating for all jobs, rating rationales, records and source material
- Establish and oversee ongoing pay equity maintenance processes
- Develop expert knowledge of job evaluation principles, pay equity law, gender bias, and the SEIU Gender Neutral Comparison System (GNCS)
- Provide information to Sector Service Managers regarding the Pay Equity implications of new positions, and new or newly organized workplaces when requested. Providing information and assistance to the Union regarding novel Pay Equity issues
- Request information from Part II Employers about Pay Equity Act compliance and related issues
- Work with Pay Equity Counsel to develop generic questionnaires and ratings
- Provide assistance to external counsel where necessary
- Attend regular sector and staff meetings, as needed.
- Maintain knowledge of all relevant labour and healthcare legislation.
- Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION:

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
- A minimum of 3-year experience working with a union as a union representative, business agent or steward
- Experience with pay equity plans, practices, and legislation.
- Experience dealing with union members, hospital representatives, HR consultants, pay equity consultants, legal counsel, other unions, government representatives, Equal Pay Coalition, Pay Equity Commission, Pay Equity Hearings Tribunal.
- Experience conducting negotiations with employer representatives and external consultants and communicating with/litigating before the Pay Equity Commission and Pay Equity Hearings Tribunal.
SKILLS & COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
- Knowledge of the Pay Equity Act and the impact of legislative changes in the area of labor law and human rights is an asset.
- Knowledge of or ability to learn concepts of gender neutrality and gender bias
- Understanding of equitable compensation practices
- Demonstrated knowledge of labour principles and the Canadian labour movement
- Proficiency in languages other than English is an asset.
- IT skills is an asset
- Understands legal implications of language.
- Ability to maintain a high degree of ethical conduct.
- Strong interpersonal skills, excellent writing, and verbal skills
