Recreation Coordinator

**The Position**:
Under the general supervision of the Manager, responsible for the recreation component of the shishalh Nation Programs and Services. The position works with other staff and agencies, both within the Nation and outside the community, to develop and implement holistic recreation programs. The position is responsible for creating effective and innovative recreation programs for children, youth, adults, and Elders. Programming is consistent with the four dimensions of health: physical, emotional, mental and spiritual and meets identified Community Member Services priorities.
Research, Consult and Develop Programs
- Ensure opportunities exist for every Nation resident to engage in satisfying and constructive sport, recreation and leisure activities. In an advisory and supportive capacity, you will work closely with community entities to develop and implement related sport, recreation and leisure programs and will implement strategic programs and services aimed at living healthier lives and building a healthier community.
- To increase participation opportunities by providing recreation and physical activity programs suitable to the needs and interests of all community members.
- To increase the number of volunteers assisting with managing and coordinating the Nation's community physical activity programs and services.
Plan and Implement Activities
- Plan and develop sport and recreation programs to ensure that activities and events are available to all community members.
- Coordinate facilities and programs with department staff.
- Assist with coordinating and monitoring contracts and insurance agreements for recreation programs.
- Provide activities that support youth leadership.
- Coordinate the involvement of local Elders in all programming. Ensure programming is culturally relevant and should include traditional language components.
- Implement a variety of recreation programs which may involve coordinating fundraising activities, organizing games, outdoor activities, tournaments, family events, holiday activities and youth leadership opportunities.
- Coordinate family fun days and fun filled weekend activities.
- Coordinate activities such as seasonal and recreational events.
Promote Programs and Services
- Promote a positive atmosphere for community youth by demonstrating strong role models, leadership, and team-building qualities and developing strong relationships with the community and youth.
- Perform public relation duties; respond to complaints and support a broad range of sports within the community; prepares new releases, information and marketing bulletins or other publicity on recreation programs and activities; identify and meet the recreational needs of diverse community groups.
- Recruit and coordinate volunteers to assist in the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the programs being offered. Help the community recognize the benefit of volunteerism and the importance of community 'buy-in'.
- Inform community members of activities through postings, calendars and newsletters.
Monitor Program and Services for Effectiveness
- Prepare monthly reports detailing activities, statistics on Members served, budget variances, progress reports and program planning for coming months' activities.
- Ensure that services are delivered in a manner that maintains excellent Member relations, including Member advocacy to ensure the delivery of respectful and culturally sensitive services through other service providers.
- Develop, implement and evaluate the results of holistic programs in adherence to the Nation's and department's policies, strategies and procedures and the determinants of health while recognizing that not all target groups have the same needs.
- Prepare regular and ad hoc program reports for review by the Manager.
**Education and Qualifications**:
- Diploma in Recreational Leadership or relevant Health/Social Science/humanities field, with recent relevant experience in community health-related work such as developing and implementing community based health/social programs. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered.
- Acceptable Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search.
- Doctor's Medical Fitness Note (fit for work), immunization record, and TB test. Ability to demonstrate and maintain a healthy, self-sufficient lifestyle.
- This position requires flexibility in working hours in order to arrange and participate in evening and weekend recreational activities, including workshops and recreational / health events.
- Experience in recreation program development, implementation and review.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to participate in active sports and recreation activities and organize and direct programs.
- Ability to work evening shifts, work weekends, and establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public.
