Media & Government Relations Advisor

**Job Description**:
In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health) patient and staff safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone; as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.
The Media & Government Relations Advisor is responsible for the provision of strategic and day-to-day proactive and responsive media and government relations and issues services for Island Health including:
- Managing the interface and relationship between media outlets and Island Health;
- Ensuring emerging and ongoing issues receive responsive and accurate attention;
- Maintaining strong relationships with Government Communications and Public Engagement (GCPE) and provincial, regional and local government;
- Providing an active leadership role in emergency and crisis communication activities and planning;
- Providing communications assistance with Island Health projects and services of interest to stakeholders, including but not limited to, public audiences, community groups, interest and advocacy groups, various levels of government, and media;
- Assisting with the day-to-day health information needs of stakeholder groups;
- Providing support to significant projects as designated by the Director or Vice-President;
- Assisting in community relations and consultation activities, health promotion and improvement initiatives.
**QUALIFICATIONS**:
**Education, Training And Experience**:
A level of education, training and experience equivalent to a Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations or Marketing and Seven (7) years' recent related experience in communications, marketing and/or journalism, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Previous experience in a health care, government, public sector, not-for-profit or corporate environment an asset. Knowledge of current health topics and issues in BC and within the Island Health region an asset.
**Skills And Abilities**:
- Ability to develop responsive, interesting original content.
- Outstanding written communication skills.
- Skilled in writing for a variety of media, including print, video (scripts), and Web.
- Extensive knowledge of communications tools and practices used within a corporate environment.
- Working knowledge of design, photography, publications production, desktop publishing and electronic communications.
- Proven experience developing promotional campaign plans and materials for the purpose of community engagement, both online and not.
- User experience with social media, multimedia
- Demonstrated ability to exercise good judgment and maintain strict confidentiality.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate verbally in a confident and effective manner.
- Excellent interpersonal relations and demonstrated ability to build and foster relationships between groups.
- Ability to handle confidential and/or sensitive issues in a professional manner.
- Ability to remain calm, alert and high functioning under stressful situations.
- Ability to work independently and under pressure to meet tight deadlines.
- Ability to set priorities and be results-oriented.
- Ability to work effectively with senior leaders and other stakeholders in a wide variety of settings across the organization.
- Flexibility to provide after-hours service in emergency or unpredictable circumstances.
