The Custodian I classification means, for the purpose of the Agreement, an employee who is engaged to perform custodial services and supervise cleaners in a school. Work involves maintaining assigned school premises in a clean and orderly condition and performing minor repairs and maintenance as required. Employees of this class may supervise cleaning personnel assigned to assist in a variety of custodial and cleaning duties, and ensure compliance with Occupational Health and Safety standards in the workplace. Employees must be able to operate computerized, electronic equipment in the heating and mechanical systems.
**Duties include the following**:
- Cleaning furniture, equipment, and fixtures;
- Sweeping, mopping and scrubbing floors;
- Stripping, waxing and polishing floors;
- Vacuuming and cleaning carpets; Cleaning lavatories and replacing lavatory supplies;
- Cleaning white/blackboards, windows and walls;
- General grounds maintenance and maintaining a safe school property and environment by shoveling snow, removing ice from school property, mowing lawns, operating a heating plant, moving furniture, equipment, supplies and materials and generally assure the security of school premises;
- Perform minor repairs and playground inspections;
- Keep records and secure inventories, make reports and requisition supplies;
- Alternate duties as assigned by Principal or Vice Principal;
- In cases where supervision is exercised, employees in this class assign and inspect work of subordinates;
- Employees of this class may work without direct supervision and determine their own work schedules in completing their assignments within approved hours of work; however, work must conform to established standards;
- Duties may also involve other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
**Minimum Qualifications**:
- Grade 12 high school diploma or GED;
- Experience is required in operating and maintaining computerized, electronic equipment in the heating, ventilation and mechanical systems associated with working in this environment;
- Must be able to work unsupervised in an assigned area and be capable of making autonomous decisions to complete the required tasks;
- Good physical health with the ability to lift 60-70 lbs, climb to a height of approximately 25 feet and work overhead in a kneeling position;
- Demonstrated ability to perform minor maintenance and repair functions;
- Demonstrated ability to understand and consistently maintain established standard cleaning procedures.
- Demonstrate ability to read and write clearly;
- Good organizational and interpersonal skills;
- Must have experience in supervising others;
- Experience cleaning in an institutional environment would be an asset;
- CPR/WHMIS/First Aid Training would be an asset;
- Experience dealing with children/youth would be an asset;
- Good work record;
- Applicants must submit a Criminal Abstract and have no past or present criminal record which would be detrimental in working in an environment with children, youth and other adults.
***CSA safety approved clothing and equipment is required for all custodian/cleaners/trades workers (permanent, relief or substitute).**
- **Custodians/Cleaners work is modified day shifts during PD days and Summer months.**:
- **Regularly scheduled shifts may also be adjusted during Inclement Weather and/or School Closures based on school needs.**
