The Human Resources Associate is viewed as the first point of contact in delivering HR services in partnership with clients of assigned groups. This will be achieved through coaching, guiding, and facilitating internal clients’ decisions to ensure successful results in accordance with relevant HR policies and processes, Collective Agreements, and applicable legislation. This key Human Resources role provides labour relations assistance to clients with respect to collective agreements, grievances, mediations, and arbitrations. The role also provides assistance with recruitment, performance management, compensation, job evaluation, pay equity, benefits, training & development, and legislative & policy compliance.

The Human Resources Associate participates in HR initiatives and projects. This role establishes credibility and maintains effective working relationships with all levels of employees and union officials, sharing information, providing services, and resolving issues to ensure client and union needs are effectively managed.

**Responsibilities**:

- Proactively assists both unionized and non-unionized client groups with labour/employee relations matters including collective agreement interpretation, policy interpretation, grievance/mediation/arbitration preparation and resolution
- Provides guidance and advice to management and staff on the implementation of human resources/employment related programs
- Works with the Negotiator during bargaining to draft proposals, prepares memoranda of settlement, drafts council reports, prepares new collective agreements, trains management on changes to the collective agreements
- Provides guidance and assistance to management and staff to ensure their compliance with legislative requirements, corporate policies, collective agreements, and work guidelines
- Resolves employee conflicts, Human Rights and Employment Standards complaints.
- Consults with and advises management on addressing employee performance and conduct issues in accordance with defined policies and procedures done on both an informal basis as well as through taking corrective action
- Advises, counsels, and guides management and employees in interpretation of human resources policies, plans, and programs
- Identifies and makes recommendations to management on operational HR issues (performance, staffing, workplace interactions etc.)
- Conducts or manages workplace investigations and prepares summaries with recommendations to resolve current and future issues
- Assists the organization as required in legal proceedings including Ontario Human Rights Tribunals, Arbitration hearings
- Negotiates on behalf of the organization to settle terminations with external legal counsel
- Provides and/or participates in the delivery of human resources programs and executes related strategies. Coordinates the delivery of corporate H.R. services and provides communication and training to management and staff related to H.R. programs and services
- Provides guidance and support to management and employees with respect to the job evaluation process and pay equity requirements/issues

**Qualifications**:

- Relevant post-secondary degree in Human Resources or Business Management
- At least 3-5 years progressive human resources experience in a unionized large sized public or private employer. An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be considered
- CHRP designation an asset
- Experience with labour relations matters such as grievances, mediations, arbitrations, and collective bargaining
- Proven experience in a related generalist role, including significant labour relations experience in a multi-union environment
- An understanding of applicable Human Resources legislation including the Employment Standards Act, Labour Relations Act, the Ontario Human Rights Code, Ontario Pay Equity Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, etc.
- Excellent communications skills both verbal and written and excellent interpersonal skills
- Strong consulting, interviewing, counseling, negotiation, mediation, problem solving and change management skills
- A proven self-starter with a demonstrated ability to work well independently
- Demonstrated tact and diplomacy
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team
- Proven ability to handle conflict and competing priorities
- Builds and maintains strong working relationships
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
