**The opportunity**:
The Cloud Computing and High Throughput Computing Systems Administrator will help UM researchers to organize their distributed computing simulation workflows on a variety of computing resources internal and external to the University.
In particular, the Specialist will assist in provisioning and supporting streaming computing workflows for the (but not limited to) University’s research groups involved with International Subatomic Physics experiments, across the HPC infrastructure of the Digital Research Alliance of Canada, DRAC’s community clouds and public clouds.
The Specialist will implement, configure, and maintain data transfer and distributed storage platforms on the local High-Performance Computing infrastructure, and on available community and public cloud resources. The Specialist will interact with DRAC’s and local enterprise IT of UM regarding reliable functioning and optimization of the workflows, troubleshooting network, authentication, and storage issues.
The Specialist will monitor the local and remote distributed storage installations and data transfer systems for the best performance. The Specialist will also interact with vendors and remote authentication providers from other (virtual) organizations.
The Specialist also takes part in the running and developing of university-wide, Linux-based HPC and hybrid HPC-cloud service offerings, and takes part in helping with other researchers’ platforms on DRAC’s community clouds.
**The qualifications and experience we’re looking for**:
- B.Sc. degree in computer science or a related field with a strong computational focus. with a minimum of 3 years of work experience in a related field is required.
- M.Sc. or Ph.D. degree in a related field will be an asset but is not required. An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Proficiency with Linux/Unix system administration, system and network security, development tools and methodology, and system management.
- Proficiency with Linux software environment and scripting (BASH and Python scripting, git, version control, autotools and CMake build environments)
- Experience in using cloud technologies and cloud automation (such AWS, Azure, OpenStack).
- Strong Experience using container orchestration platforms (such as Kubernetes)
- Experience with cloud-native storage technologies (such as S3, CEPH).
- Exposure to research computing or scientific environments
- Some knowledge of TCP/IP; experience with scientific data transfer platforms (such as Globus, FTS3, GridFTP, XrootD, Rucio)
- Experience with bare-metal and cloud-based provisioning and orchestration systems for HPC and Kubernetes would be an asset
- Experience with using High-throughput computing tools and environments (such as OpenScienceGrid, LHC Atlas, HTCondor, CVMFS etc) is desirable
- Experience with traditional High-Performance Computing (HPC) is also a plus
- Experience with orchestration and cloud deployments tools such as Terraform would be an asset
- Understanding and experience of Linux networks, authentication and identity federation systems (SSL/TLS, CILogon, Virtual organization VOMs) would be an asset
