SEIU Local 2:
**Summary**:
Working from SEIU Local 2’s head office in Mississauga, Ontario, the Communications Coordinator position is responsible for enhancing the image of SEIU Local 2 across Canada. The primary focus of this position is to co-ordinate, develop and implement creative internal and external communication and public relations strategies and programs for the Local. The Communications Coordinator, in consultation with SEIU leadership, shall oversee the development and implementation of comprehensive communication strategies and plan for all facets of the Local. The incumbent will provide expertise and functional leadership in the creation and management of the Local’s websites, social media platforms and other forms of communications.
**Qualifications**:
University or College Degree or Diploma in the area of social sciences, journalism, public relations, marketing or communications or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- A minimum of two years of demonstrated experience in communications or public relations.
- Valid Drivers license and a reliable vehicle; travel may be required.
- Ability to work long and irregular hours; on weekends and holidays as required.
- Ability to function co-cooperatively and collaboratively with other SEIU staff, exercise good judgement, exercise initiative, and manage shifting priorities
- Demonstrated commitment to social justice.
**Knowledge, Skills and Abilities**:
- Knowledge and skill in the design and production of written, visual and oral communications and public relations vehicles.
- Knowledge and skill in design and maintenance of websites.
- Knowledge and skill in the use of communication design software, including but not limited to Adobe Photoshop and familiarity with Microsoft Office tools.
- Excellent written and oral communications skills, with the ability to present information, prepare correspondence, briefs, news releases, news bulletins, pamphlets, speaking notes and other materials as required.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Ability to document communications using a computer database and other IT programs.
- Motivated self-starter who is able to work effectively with a minimum of supervision.
- Ability to work independently and with groups, as required.
- Ability to multi-task and organize time efficiently.
- Excellent group and interpersonal communications and management skills.
- Excellent research and organizational skills, with careful attention to detail.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Additional language skills would be an asset.
**Duties and Responsibilities**:
- A. Communication Strategies/Campaigns_
- Initiates and plans Public Relations campaigns: defining goals; analyzing problems and opportunities; liaising with Union leaders, Staff and Union Members and external contacts.
- Co-ordinate, develop, and implement communications strategies for Organizing campaigns
- Responds to inquiries from individuals, journalists and other organizations, as required.
- Develops and maintains good working relations with the media, including local and national newspapers, magazines, radio and television.
- Assists Leadership in the development and implementation of a comprehensive communications strategy and plan for the Local. Prepares and produces communications strategies and related documents as required, and annually prepares a communication plan proposal.
- Assists Leadership in the coordination of communications with National and International SEIU partners.
- Develops a good working relationship with media representatives and is responsible for the dissemination of information thereto.
- B. Correspondence/Publications_
- Designs, provides creative direction, writes, edits, produces and ensures distribution of SEIU materials, including: a regular newsletters (print and/or electronic); issue specific bulletins and pamphlets for circulation to the membership; press releases, in-house newsletters, speeches/speaking notes, articles and annual reports;
- Prepares and supervises the production of publicity brochures, handouts, direct mail leaflets, promotional videos, photographs, films and multimedia programs.
- Researches, prepares and produces briefs for presentation to government and other bodies on issues and social policy matters, and otherwise as required.
- C. Website / Social Media Administration_
- Responsible for all SEIU Local 2 websites and other electronic communication technology.
- Responsible for writing and editing content, post newsletters and other materials, maintain and update information on the SEIU websites.
- D. Education_
- Provides support and advice to Union Leaders in regard to speaking in public at presentations, press conferences, radio and TV interviews, and meetings, speaks to issues as required.
