Primary Focus
The Finance Officer is responsible for ensuring that financial accounts are accurate and complete. They are also responsible for the timely provision of financial reports to management to aid in their decision-making and to obtain accurate information from management regarding forecasted expenditures. The Finance Officer also performs analysis for budgets and forecasts.
What do the daily responsibilities look like?
**On any given day, the Finance Officer will**:
- prepare monthly financial reports for management that compare expenses incurred to the budget and the latest forecast
- perform prepaid, accrual, and other month-end entries as well as reconciliations in a timely manner for balance sheet and revenue accounts related to the month-end close of the financial system
- analyze specific expense accounts and provide results to the Senior Financial Analyst and Controller to ensure that costs being incurred are reasonable
- prepare monthly analyses of key expenditures for use by management and create additional financial reports in the accounting system that aid in the analysis of accounts or provide additional information to management
- analyze costs and discuss trends with management to assist in the compilation of costs related to the annual budget preparation and in routine cost centre forecasts
- aid in the preparation of all documentation required for the annual financial audit of the organization; this will include the preparation of all year-end reconciliations, working papers requested by the auditors, and coordinating the verification of invoices by the auditors
- develop, document, update, and provide interpretation of financial policies and procedures for the organization as required, including (but not limited to) policies related to travel, credit cards, treasury, and fixed assets
- update the fixed-asset schedule, including the recording of the assets and the corresponding depreciation for the assets
- participate in special projects from time to time that have an impact on the financial system or financial processes within the organization
- prepare HST and QST returns and communicate with tax authorities as required
- review the processes with the understanding of the need for process improvement.
Is this the right role for you?
**The Finance Officer will likely have**:
- a postsecondary education in a relevant area, such as Business Administration or Accounting, and no less than 4 years working in a similar role; an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be considered
- knowledge of financial principles and practices related to the preparation of financial statements, budgets, and account analyses
- advanced analytical skills as well as the ability to exercise good judgment
- strong time management, organizational, and prioritization skills along with a high degree of flexibility to meet ongoing client needs
- the ability to be proactive and able to work independently as required
- excellent oral and written communication skills to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization with strong attention to detail
- experience working collaboratively, prioritizing, and balancing multiple competing tasks effectively in a fast-paced and dynamic environment
- the characteristics of being respectful, approachable, and team-oriented while building strong working relationships and a positive work environment
- a demonstrated ability to understand information databases and business financial systems
- an intermediate-advanced proficiency using MS Word, templates, and large Excel files.
