**Career Summary**
Under the general direction of the Mgr. Financial Planning & Analysis and with dotted line responsibility to the CFO, the Accounting Associate is responsible for assisting in all aspects of financial accounting including monitoring and tracking daily bank activity, compiling monthly reports for bank reporting, customer allowances and rebates, sales tax reporting, month end and year end preparation.
**Primary Duties and Responsibilities**:
1. Responsible for recording bank activity
- Tracks and update bank activity
- Performs daily reporting on cash status
- Assists with weekly and monthly bank reporting package
- Creates, organizes, maintains, and updates files and records utilizing database and spreadsheet software
2. Responsible for customer allowances and rebates
- Reviews and approves credit memo requests from AR
- Tracks and updates customers sales allowances and rebates
- Calculates and posts monthly accruals and reconciles accounts
3. Responsible for assisting with month end preparation
- Reconciles bank accounts and selected general ledger accounts
- Prepares sales tax remittances and posting of entries
- Clears A/P cheques, wires
- Enters and posts A/R contra entries
4. Responsible for assisting with year end close
- Maintains an audit trail of documents and records
- Assists auditors when necessary
**Qualifications Required**
- Enrolment in a recognized accounting program is a definite asset
- Thorough knowledge of accounting principles and practices is required
- Knowledge of letters of credit is considered an asset
- This position requires exceptional computer proficiency, an advanced understanding of Excel spreadsheets and formulas and a working knowledge of MS Word, Outlook, and the Internet, as well as prior experience with accounting software packages
- Prior experience within an import/export business is considered an asset
**Skills**
- Strong organizational, critical thinking and internal/external customer service skills
- Experienced in managing multiple projects and tasks at one time and in meeting completion deadlines
- Ability to drive for results
- Ability to be accurate and pay attention to detail
- Ability to communicate in a clear and effective manner both verbally and in written correspondence
- Ability to prioritize tasks to work in an efficient and organized manner.
- Ability to utilize a high level of mathematical skill
- Ability to participate in on-going efforts at process improvement by recognizing inefficiencies and making appropriate recommendations
**Working Conditions**
The Accounting Associate works in an office setting. The individual spends most of his/her time in a seated position. Data entry is required of the individual on a regular basis.
