We are seeking a highly motivated Radioactive Waste Management Specialist who will be primarily responsible for the implementation of the TRIUMF Waste Management Program and requirements as mandated by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) and other provincial and local regulatory agencies and providing radioactive waste characterization, packaging, and shipping in accordance with TRIUMF procedures and regulatory requirements.

In this position, you will be joining TRIUMF Environment, Health, and Safety Division, working with the Waste Management Program Lead and members of the Radiation Protection Group. Under general supervision, you will be responsible for performing tasks associated with the management of radioactive waste to fulfill TRIUMF's mission, vision and values while maintaining regulatory compliance. You will also work with radioactive waste generators, lab managers and other EH&S personnel.- Perform radiological surveys (radiation levels, fixed / removable contamination, airborne activation) and generate associated documents, reports, and audits of assigned area(s).-
- Maintain low-level and medium-level radioactive waste inventory using available spreadsheets and documents in an organized and safe configuration.- Interpret data from testing and analysis (ie. Gamma spectroscopy) for various radionuclides in a multitude of samples (metal, liquid, soil, concrete, etc.) and use this information to make decisions and recommendations related to waste processing.- Process, disassemble and cut legacy low-level radioactive waste using conventional methods, segregate, and package accordingly.- Segregate and dispose of non-radioactive waste, identify recyclable materials, and keep the database up to date according to the TRIUMF Waste Management Program.- Implement required safety practices, including surveys, contamination control, dosimetry, posting/labelling, and associated documentation.- Prepare and package low-level radioactive wastes for shipment to off-site treatment/disposal facilities in accordance with Waste Management Program, and TDG shipping requirements. Label and mark radioactive waste shipping containers.- Conduct daily/weekly/monthly inspections of the radioactive waste facilities, associated waste handling and safety equipment and waste containers.- Report problems to supervisor as appropriate.- Develop sound waste characterization and sampling plans.- Ability to disassemble and/or cut parts of a variety of materials (typically commonly used metals and plastics) using conventional methods (lathe, milling machine, drill press, welding, soldering/brazing, etc.).- Effective communication and computer skills (Word, Excel), and the ability to communicate both verbally and in writing with a wide variety of diverse individuals.- Knowledge of and ability to select, use and maintain specialized personnel protective equipment necessary for working with radioactive materials.- Ability to complete TDG Class 7 prescribed course of study.- Ability to operate a forklift, scissor lift, jib, and hydraulic cranes.- Ability to work in a team environment, and independently with supervision.- Safety awareness, good mechanical, and electrical aptitudes.- A strong aptitude for hands-on work and a passion for resolving housekeeping issues.- Ability to do general incidental mechanical maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair jobs is an asset.

The Radioactive Waste Management Specialist will be required to possess the following:
- A related diploma from a recognized institute of technology, or related technical certification.- One to four years of related experience in radioactive waste management or similar field.- Experience using equipment for measurement of radiation doses and contamination levels (Ludlum 14C, Ludlum 12S, RadEye, Ludlum 26-3 or similar equipment).- Experience working with industrial controls electronics and electromechanical equipment.- Experience with industrial rigging, cranes, and overhead lifting equipment is an asset.- Possession of valid BC general driver’s license.
