Neuroscience Laboratory Coordinator

**Duties and Responsibilities**:
The laboratory coordinator is responsible for the laboratory sections in designated undergraduate courses as assigned by the Chair, potentially including components of Neuroscience capstone courses. This may include summer courses as well as the fall/winter session, and may include labs scheduled during evenings and weekends. The laboratory coordinator may also be responsible for providing backup to labs that are not their primary responsibility. The lab co-ordinator is encouraged to participate in lab course improvement and pedagogical development.
**The coordinator**:
- Provides laboratory instruction to undergraduates in all laboratory sections to ensure consistency and uniformity between sections, and prepares teaching assistants for each laboratory exercise.
- Supervises all aspects of the laboratory including implementation and adherence to all applicable ethics and safety regulations.
- Supervises the day-to-day activities of approximately 20 teaching assistants who are members of CUPE local 4600, other external or undergraduate teaching assistants and undergraduate students.
- Works with the Chair or their designate to develop, optimize and implement the detailed curriculum and experimental plans for laboratory sections.
- Monitors the effectiveness of the laboratory exercises and assesses the need for changes in the laboratory course content; recommends these changes to the Chair or their designate, and implements improvements and updates on a regular and on-going basis.
- Co-ordinates with colleagues to minimize disruption of duties due to vacations, etc.
- Other related duties as requested by the Chair, providing that these duties are directly related to the role of the incumbent.
**Qualifications**:
**The incumbent must possess the following qualifications**:
- Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational and administrative skills
- Sound judgement, and relevant theoretical knowledge in neuroscience and expertise in a variety of specialized laboratory techniques and procedures.
- Proficiency in the use of pertinent instruction, technical and administrative IT software is necessary.
- Skills and/or experience at supervising students is a must.
**Education and Experience**:
**The above is normally acquired through the completion of**:
- M.Sc. in Neuroscience, or closely related field.
- Knowledge of rodent handling, rodent behavioural testing, tissue collection and sectioning, immunohistochemistry, fluorescence microscopy, tissue culture, molecular genetics, protein analysis and electrophysiology is also required.
- 3 years of related laboratory science experience, which should include masters or doctoral research, research supervisions and work as a teaching assistant, and must include the supervision of students.
- Equivalencies in experience gained through education beyond the minimum requirement will be considered.
