Join to apply for the Medical Laboratory Technologist 1 role at Public Health Ontario Location: PHO Ottawa Laboratory, 2380 St. Laurent Boulevard, Ottawa, ON Department: Ottawa Laboratory The Role To perform testing and provide accurate and timely reporting of clinical and environmental laboratory tests as part of a team of laboratory professionals, within Public Health Ontario’s (PHO’s) quality policies and technical procedures and the regulatory and accreditation requirements within their scope of work. Key Responsibilities Be competent to perform laboratory activities and conduct standardized medical/clinical/environmental tests and procedures for the isolation, quantification, identification, molecular testing and antimicrobial susceptibility testing of clinically significant bacteria, fungi, parasites, viruses and associated antibodies as applicable. Carry out testing as outlined in the method using the established quality assurance and control procedures, including internal and external proficiency testing. Report and relay results to specimen submitters, including health care providers and other parties as required, accurately, clearly, unambiguously and objectively within acceptable turnaround time (TAT). Authorize the release of laboratory test results and discuss test results with clients within the restrictions of the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario regulations. Ensure specimens are handled and stored appropriately to protect the integrity of the test and the interests of the laboratory and the customer. Perform review of daily QC materials, evaluate significance of deviations and take appropriate actions to resolve any discrepancies when QC results fall outside the acceptable range(s). Maintain and monitor equipment and inventory of supplies to ensure operability and adequate supply. Provide direction and guidance to Laboratory Attendants responsible for supporting Medical Laboratory Technologists and senior staff and assist with training/retraining staff. Provide technical assistance to Senior Technologists and Operational Lead in carrying out testing and/or special projects. Perform activities to support the laboratory’s Quality Management Program including those that support accreditation and regulatory requirements. Maintain privacy and confidentiality as outlined by PHO’s corporate policies. Perform laboratory activities impartially, disclose any conflicts of interest and do not allow commercial, financial or other pressures to compromise work or impartiality. Perform other duties or projects as assigned. Knowledge and Skills Knowledge of medical/environmental laboratory techniques, procedures, laboratory safety practices and use of laboratory equipment in the conduct of standardized tests and procedures. Knowledge of computer applications to utilize standard and laboratory information systems. Knowledge of accreditation and regulatory requirements that impact the scope of testing to ensure compliance in laboratory testing. Knowledge of PHO policies, protocols, including PHO’s code of conduct; ensures confidentiality is maintained when releasing test results and during discussions with clients. Education and Experience Certification in good standing with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO). Valid Human Pathogens and Toxins Act security clearance may be required when working in the CL3 Laboratory. Attributes and Competencies Good oral and written communication skills: in order to write standard operating procedures and complete records. li>Good interpersonal skills to work collaboratively with colleagues and to liaise with laboratory staff and sample submitters, including health care providers, to relay laboratory test results and other information. May be required to lift up to 10 kg. May be required to work within a biological safety cabinet/fume hood. Physical coordination and manual dexterity in the use of keyboard, operate and maintain laboratory equipment, and perform testing of specimens. May be required to perform repetitive tasks such as pipetting. May be required to stand or sit for the period of one shift. Requires physical activity such as walking, lifting, stretching, and bending. May be required to work rotational shifts as scheduled.
