Education Director

The **Education Director**, reports to the Administrator and ensures that the interests of the Penelakut Tribe members are represented in all matters of Indigenous Education. The **Education Director** supports the strategic initiatives for the implementation of Indigenous education; supports Indigenous rights to education that also support traditions and culture; and ensures that all treaty rights and statutory laws are respected and protected as they are applicable to Indigenous Education. The **Education Director** is a key member of the senior management team.
Preference will be given to persons of Aboriginal ancestry and/or having knowledge of the Spune’luxutth culture and traditions.
The annual salary for this position is $84,000.
The Education Director works Monday - Thursday 7:45-4:15 (evenings and weekends as required). Daily transportation to Penelakut Island is provided via water taxi.
**QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE**
- Degree in Education, Education Administration or other related discipline; and
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in the administration of educational programs and service requirements for First Nations student learning needs; or
- An equivalent combination of education, training and experience;
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a leadership role, including management and development of programs; managing, directing and leading employees; and liaising with various regulatory agencies;
- Experience preparing financial and funding proposals and working with feasibility analysis procedures.
- Experience developing and negotiating contracts;
- Experience working with third party funders and associated programs and projects;
- Experience developing, managing and controlling operating budgets;
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license, a clean driver’s abstract and reliable vehicle is required;
- Valid standard first aid and CPR certificate may be required;
- Clean criminal record check required.
**About the Penelakut Tribe**
Penelakut Tribe is a Hul’qumi’num speaking community that is separated into the following four reserve locations accessible by ferry or boat and located adjacent to Chemainus and in the Southern Gulf Islands:
Tsussie, 15.5 hectares, Northern tip of Galiano Island, 29.1 hectares, Tent Island, 34.4 hectares, and Penelakut Island, 556.7 hectares
Together, we have a total of 1,001 registered Penelakut Community Members that are split into half on-reserve and half off-reserve. Our traditional language and our cultural customs are alive and celebrated, and our elders are active and respected. A diversity of housing allows our Elders, Youth and Families to stay in the community and grow through different stages of their lives. Members are supported by a strong community that take care of each other.
