Reporting to the Director of Labour Relations, the Manager of Labour Relations is the operational lead for the Labour Relations department, ensuring that the interests and rights of our members are protected and advanced. This leadership role demands a seasoned, detail orientated professional with a profound understanding of labour relations, legal frameworks, and a strategic vision to navigate the complexities of the modern labour relations in the healthcare environment.
The role will be responsible for overseeing the Labour Relations Department, a department focused on fostering relationships with members and stakeholders, resolving disputes, and championing fair and equitable working conditions for our members. Core responsibilities include daily oversight of staff, staff development and mentorship, project management and will serve as the initial point of escalation for LR concerns.
SEIU is an anti-racist organization, this role will be fundamental in realizing our union’s goal to eliminate structural discrimination through an activist approach to combating discrimination and harassment of members through Labour Relations modalities.
**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**
- ** Labour Relations Strategy**
- Develop and execute comprehensive labour relations strategies aligned with the union's goals and values.
- Collaborate with union leadership, Director of Bargaining, Director of Member Services and Member Services Managers to establish priorities and objectives for labour relations initiatives.
- Lead the work related to the mastery of skills for LR and other specialists within the organization. With an initial focus on Labour Relation Specialists and SEIU Nurses work.
- Through collaboration with the Member Service Managers, support the utilization of collective agreement-based processes, namely labour management meeting, staff planning and other forms of workplace-based committees.
- As the primary contact for employers concerning high-level LR matters, build and assess union-employer relationships. Determine the most effective LR strategy based on employer’s disposition and actions.
- Focus on grievance and case management and resolution. Working with the various internal stakeholders, determine, plan and execute strategies that enhance grievance outcomes, shorten timelines and improve processes.
- Oversee our grievance centre, working closely with our MSC staff. Monitor daily operations, grievance intake and make recommendations on process improvements.
- ** Collective Agreement Enforcement**
- Oversee the administration and interpretation of collective bargaining agreements to ensure compliance and protect members' rights.
- Collect, analyse data, and develop tactics to maximize the effectiveness of the various collective agreement provisions.
- Working with the Director of Bargaining, participate in the bargaining processes, with a specific focus on demonstrated need for proposals, and by providing quantitative and qualitative information to identify proposals based on LR activities.
- Support the work of harmonizing our collective agreements.
- ** Departmental oversight**
- Lead the Labour Relations Department, maintain continuous oversight of the Labour Relations specialists, executive assistant, administrative assistants, researcher and member programs.
- Review, analyse and report on the effectiveness of the Labour Relations Union representative position, and SEIU Nurses processes. Make recommendations for changes as needed.
- Foster an environment based on respect, performance, organizational objectives, justice and professional growth.
- ** Relationship Building**
- Cultivate positive relationships with members, employers, and other stakeholders to foster constructive labour-management interactions, where possible. Leverage these relationships to meet the needs of the membership and organization.
