**Organization**
Jane Norman College (“College”) is a non-funded, non-profit, private college which specializes in educating human services professionals in early childhood education, youth work, and teacher assistance. In addition to college programs the College offers a wide variety of workshops. Also run under the auspices of the College are the Jane Norman Family Home Day Care Agency, the Dr Jane Norman Child Study Centre, Jane Norman College ParkView Child Care Centre, the Russell Resource Library, the Jane Norman After School Program, and the Early Years Support Site (Truro).
**Position Scope**
Under the governance structure of the College, and reporting to the Centre Director, or designate, the Assistant Director supports the everyday operation of the Jane Norman College Bible Hill Childcare Centre and as a staff member supports the overall function of Jane Norman College and its programs and services.
**Nature of Work**
Work is commensurate with that of an assistant day care centre director employed in a licensed childcare facility and with a supervisory role in a non-profit organization. Fulfilling the role as Assistant Director, the work is a combination of administrative, supervisory and, the employee must also possess the licensing requirement level (Level 2), experience, and will work in in ratio, as required. While the Jane Norman College Bible Hill Childcare Centre will not be a lab school there will be students from the College’s Early Childhood Education Diploma Program in the Centre on an ongoing basis. In addition to _The Early Learning and Child Care Act and Regulations_, the College’s own rules and regulations, staff must be aware and abide by any applicable Jane Norman College Bible Hill Childcare Centre site policies. The position requires attention to detail, an ability to supervise multiple staff and manage many responsibilities at once, and the ability, as an experienced and exemplary early childhood educator, to support a high-quality program. The Assistant Centre Director furthers not only the success of the childcare operation but also all College programs and services by supporting the Centre Director and the staff.
**Core Duties**
The following description outlines the range of duties that the Assistant Director will be required to perform
Overarching:
- Perform all duties of an ECE in a licensed centre (ECE position description) and understand the role and responsibilities of the Centre Director and be able to fill the role as necessary (Centre Director position description).
Pedagogical:
- Support the Centre’s pedagogical plan as it relates to Quality Matters, Inclusion Support, and the Provincial Curriculum Framework, or other best practices for the programs.
- Support staff in pursuit of agreed upon goals, in consultation with the College’s Early Learning Advisory Committee and/or Centre Director.
- Monitor the plans implemented, help Centre Director ensure that adjustments are made accordingly, and the documentation for plans are continuously updated.
- Oversee professional development for himself/herself and staff in each program by assessing needs of program and individual staff in conjunction with Centre Director.
Human Resources:
- Support the planning and implementation of appropriate staffing schedule to ensure ratio coverage.
- Support and supervise staff (full-time, part-time, seasonal, or temporary) to ensure staff are meeting their required roles.
- Aid Centre Director in staff performance and meet with staff as they request, or as individual problems arise.
- As directed by Centre Director, ensure all documentation for new staff has been filed for the Centre (VSC, CAR); provided to the Executive Director (income tax forms, banking forms, signed forms - e.g., contract, confidentiality form) or given to the new staff member (Parent Handbook, Staff Manual).
- Aid Centre Director in keeping staff files up to date and complete including but not limited to tracking attendance maintenance records of staff for internal purposes (possible OT) and for organizational purposes (ROE, payroll, exhaustion of benefits), professional development attainments, vacation scheduling.
- Aid in the organization of staff vacations, appointments, and time out of the office to ensure ratio coverage without necessity of hiring temporary staff.
- Supervise early childhood education students (who are either observing or on placement) as required and complete requisite paperwork.
- Work with Centre Director to hire staff as required and check with Centre Director that all relevant paperwork is complete and up to date.
- Support new staff members by continuously introducing them to other College staff, showing them the processes and procedures
