**WHAT YOU’LL DO**:
The Support Services Shift Supervisor is a member of the Environmental / Nutrition Services management team. This individual provides direction, leadership, support and guidance in the day-to-day activities of the Environmental Services staff which includes Housekeeping, Waste and Linen Activities and the Nutrition Services staff.
The Shift Supervisor facilitates the performance of all duties in accordance with Hospital and departmental policies and procedures, to ensure that all areas of the hospital are maintained in a clean and orderly condition and supervises all aspects of the patient meal services ensuring quality food, temperatures, and timely delivery.
This person will also be involved in planning and problem solving within the Environmental Services and Nutrition Services Department. The Supervisor acts with discretion within well-defined procedures/practices e.g., determine priorities; may deviate from established procedures/practice provided standards are met. Shift Supervisors act for the manager on a particular shift and are accountable for that shift’s operations.
**Human Resources Management**:
- Coaches and empowers staff.
- Participates in the interview process for new staff and provides hiring recommendations to the Manager
- Assists in the creation and revision of Position Descriptions
- Conducts orientation in-services including scheduling, safety, WHMIS, routine practices and supervises training in work techniques and work routines
- Monitors and documents individual staff performance and attendance and shares with the Manager
- Participates in staff performance appraisals, as well as disciplinary reviews
- Provides on-going staff training
- Registers staff for education sessions
**Resource Management**:
- Ensures all food, paper and chemicals are stored properly
- Coordinates the day-to-day operations of the department to ensure quality client service
- Monitors the daily work of the Environmental Services staff and Nutrition Services staff and reassigns resources based on staffing and service demands
- Works with clients throughout the hospital to ensure the activities of Environmental Services and Nutrition Services meet their needs
- Assesses problems and exercises sound judgement in problem solving
- Coordinates and facilitates staff involvement in the evaluation of new products and equipment.
- Maintains records of work inspection, project work, inventories of supplies, equipment, replacement parts
- Participates in departmental planning to include development of department goals and objectives
- Schedules and assigns project work to employees
- Assists to locate replacement staff for sick/EL calls as required
- Monitors the functioning of equipment, reports equipment breakdown and repair status as per established processes
**Quality and Risk Management**:
- Participates in the development and monitoring of the department quality assurance/improvement plan
- Collaborates with the Manager to monitor trends in incident reports to identify areas for improvement
- Takes a lead role in the investigation of near-misses and incidents. The Supervisor reports investigation results to the manager
- Monitor and evaluate key performance and quality indicators to identify variances and opportunities
- Conducts regular quality control inspections in all areas of the hospital to ensure that duties are carried out by employees as instructed
