Restoration and Monitoring Technician

The Nature Trust of British Columbia (NTBC) is a leading non-profit land conservation organization dedicated to protecting critical habitat for wildlife, fish, and plants in BC. Since 1971, we have secured over 180,000 acres of ecologically significant land.
NTBC is seeking a Restoration and Monitoring Technician to join our Restoration, Monitoring and Inventory (RMI) team within the West Coast Conservation Land Management Program (WCCLMP). The WCCLMP is a multi-partner program that includes Environment and Climate Change Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, BC Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship, Ducks Unlimited Canada, The Nature Trust of British Columbia, and the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation.
The Restoration and Monitoring Technician will undertake all aspects of fieldwork associated with implementing a coastal British Columbia estuary monitoring program to determine estuary resilience at 20 locations spanning Vancouver Island, the central coast, and Haida Gwaii. The Restoration and Monitoring Technician will also assist with the implementation of several ongoing ecological restoration projects on Vancouver Island.
**Responsibilities**: Working under the direction of the Restoration Biologist and the Senior Restoration and Monitoring Technician, the Restoration and Monitoring Technician will be responsible for:
- Fieldwork logistics planning, including identifying appropriate tide windows for fieldwork between all sites, booking accommodations and transportation (helicopter, rental vehicle, etc.), liaising with First Nations partners to arrange fieldwork support (boat access, etc.).
- Carrying out fieldwork (i.e., environmental monitoring equipment deployment, datalogger downloads and maintenance, equipment calibration, water quality measurements using multi-parameter sondes, using specialized field equipment to take environmental measurements, occasional fish/wildlife surveys).
- Following standard operating procedures to standardize data collection and obtain high quality data.
- Collecting detailed field notes and entering data into master databases.
- Supervising equipment contractors and volunteer groups during restoration activities.
- Undertaking office assignments under the direction of the Restoration Biologist and Senior Restoration Technician.
**Required Qualifications, Experience, and Skills**:
- Post-Secondary education (degree or technical diploma) in Environmental Science/ Geography/ Resource Management/Biology or related applicable discipline.
- Registered as (or eligible to obtain within six months) Registered Biology Technologist (R.B.Tech.) or Applied Biology Technician (A.B.T.) designation with the BC College of Applied Biologists.
- Demonstrated experience conducting fieldwork in remote locations, including navigation using a Garmin GPS, compass, Avenza.
- Physical fitness to handle extensive fieldwork that may include long hikes/walks over sometimes difficult terrain, through inclement weather, with heavy lifting/hauling.
- Demonstrated experience collecting environmental field data.
- Experience working with First Nations, multiple partners and stakeholders in a collaborative environment.
- A positive attitude, a constant desire to learn, well organized and must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with a focus on quality.
- Strong awareness of health and safety and a safety conscious attitude.
- Experience with data management including Microsoft Access, Microsoft Excel, ArcGIS Collector, and Google Earth KMZ files.
- Proficiency with technical report writing.
- Valid BC driver’s license.
- Must be legally allowed to work in Canada
- Basic First Aid (OFA Level 1 for Industry).
- Knowledge of coastal flora, fish, and wildlife (e.g., identification skills) an asset.
- Boating proficiency, including BC Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC) or Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP) an asset.
**Job Location**: The position will be based in our Nanaimo office located within the Ministry of Water, Land Resource Stewardship building. Note: this position requires frequent travel throughout Vancouver Island, the central coast, and Haida Gwaii.
**Compensation**: This full-time term position is in effect until 31 March 2026, with the possibility of extension based on available funding.
- Salary range is $47,000 to $51,000 commensurate with experience.
