As a Youth Services Librarian, you will work with library staff to develop and support programming and other services based on best practices and community demand. You will engage with customers by making presentations about the library, participating in outreach events and collaborating with like-minded organizations.
**As the** **_Youth Services Librarian_** **you will**:
- Assist with planning, organizing, promoting, conducting, monitoring and evaluating system-wide and site-specific programs and services for children, young adults, parents and adults who work with youth.
- Support policy development by conducting research, preparing reports and drafting recommendations.
- Meet with Youth Services staff through a schedule of regular branch visits.
- Develop and deliver staff training to develop skills in program design/delivery and reference/reader’s advisory work, including training in the use of current and emerging technologies, in consultation with Information and Virtual Services.
- Develop new programs and services in response to needs assessment and in support of best practices.
- Provide assistance and support, for special projects involving children’s and young adult programs and services as a result of new initiatives, grants, sponsorship and donations.
- Write grant proposals, produce documentation for grant projects and prepare the final report for the funder.
- Assist in preparing recommended system goals for children’s and young adult programs and services.
- Contribute to public awareness of programs and services for children and young adults by making public presentations and responding to media requests as appropriate and in consultation with Community Outreach and Marketing.
- Conduct off-site presentations and provide outreach support outside the regular schedule (occasional evening and weekend)
**Your education and qualifications include**:
1. A Master of Library & Information Sciences (MLIS/MLS) degree from an institution accredited by the American Library Association (ALA). An MLIS degree (or equivalent) obtained internationally through a formally accredited institution may also be considered.
2. Knowledge of best practices and current trends in library services and programs for children and young adults.
3. Knowledge of Children’s and Young Adult literature.
4. Basic knowledge of child and adolescent development including milestones of literacy skill acquisition.
5. Demonstrated ability to plan, organize and evaluate.
6. Well-developed problem-solving and human relations skills.
7. Ability to communicate well orally and in writing.
8. Ability to make presentations and to promote library programs, services and collections.
9. Ability to do basic math.
10. Working knowledge of Word, Excel, Outlook.
11. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization, external contacts and the public, in accordance with the Respectful Workplace Policy
**Conditions of employment**:
- Must be physically capable of performing the duties of the position (i.e. Must be able to lift boxes and equipment weighing 20-25 pounds, and set up tables and chairs in meeting rooms)
