**Job Summary**
The Social Worker, Urgent Care, under the direction of the Assistant Manager, Urgent Care, will be responsible for providing direct service to individuals in our Urgent Foster Care Program, including assessment of program eligibility, foster service planning, and liaising with community partners, as well as act as a supportive resource for individuals who are vulnerably housed and require care for their pets.
**Main Duties/Responsibilities**
- Manage Urgent Care Foster cases.
- Provide support to clients who are facing crisis and requesting intake of their animal.
i. Provide appropriate resources and care to individuals who are vulnerably housed or homeless individuals - including those with addictions, illness or domestic violence situations.
- Coordinate with Community Partners, acting as point person for referral of clients to relevant community agencies.
- Communicate with appropriate parties to ensure the intake process of animals goes smoothly.
i. Be available for after-hour arrivals.
- Handle client or partner communication from animal intake to return to owner.
- Handle animal case management from animal intake to return to owner.
i. Coordinate the movement of animals into and out of the foster care systems.
ii. Prepare all supplies needed to go out with foster animals as well as pickups for animals currently on foster.
- Prepare reports and maintain appropriate records.
- Foster Care duties as required:
- Coordinate the placement of animals in need of fostering with appropriate Foster Parent.
- Provide assistance and support to Foster Parents.
- Ensure the health and wellbeing of animals in foster care.
- Build and maintain a database of potential Foster Parents.
- Foster, promote, support and drive inclusion and influence others to promote, embrace and progress Diversity, Equity & Inclusion at Toronto Humane Society.
- Be aware of and work within the regulations of all Toronto Humane Society policies and protocols.
- Work in compliance with the provisions of the OHSA and its regulations, including understanding and adhering to the requirements of the Health and Safety Manual, and any other rules and regulations established by the Toronto Humane Society.
- Work cooperatively with all volunteers and recognize the talent and commitment they bring to the Society.
- Other Duties as required in the day-to-day operation of the Society.
**Qualifications/Requirements**
- BSW or MSW.
- Registered with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers.
- At least 3 years’ experience working within a community-based setting and demonstrated knowledge in current best practices.
- Thorough knowledge of the scope and activities of local and private health and welfare agencies and community organizations. Knowledge of social service, shelter and health care systems required.
- Practical skills and experience in serving clients who are in crisis and require support. Excellent client needs assessment skills.
- Robust theoretical knowledge of social work.
- Presentation skills.
- Knowledge of animal care an asset.
- Meticulous records maintenance skills.
- Ability to prioritize and manage conflicting demands.
- Ability to deal with people sensitively, tactfully, diplomatically, and professionally at all times.
- Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to remain calm and poised in urgent situations.
- Maintain a professional appearance, demeanour, and attitude at all times.
- Ability to respond quickly in a dynamic and changing environment.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office programs (including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
- Willingness and ability to interact with a variety of animal species of varying temperaments.
- Ability to speak other languages in addition to English is an asset.
- Experience working with marginalized communities including homelessness, substance use, or mental illness is an asset.
**Work Conditions**
- Flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- On-call duties required.
- Occasional overtime.
- Attendance and participation in training.
- Operation of desktop computer and peripherals.
- Extended periods of sitting.
- Interaction with employees, management, and the public at large.
- Working in a busy office environment with frequent interruptions.
- May involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of heavy to moderately heavy objects and materials and some combination of climbing and balancing to include stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling.
- Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, weather, temperature and noise extremes, hazardous materials, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, toxic agents, animal/wildlife attacks, animal/human bites, disease, pathogenic substances, or rude/irate customers.
This position is **non-unionized**.
Pay Rate: $24 - $ 27.88
