**OVERVIEW**

Reporting directly to the Family Support Coordinator, the Cook provides the basis for the overall food service delivery in the Shelter and is responsible for the preparation of daily lunch and dinner at the Shelter. The Cook will maintain a safe and clean environment, as well as ensure the Shelter is stocked with kitchen supplies at all times. Occasional guidance and supervision of kitchen volunteers will be required. The Cook maintains a healthy professional relationship with all staff, volunteers, leadership, students and clients residing at the Shelter, and has an understanding of the dynamics of domestic violence and/or trauma.

**QUALIFICATIONS**

High School Graduation or equivalency, previous cooking and food service experience in a residential setting, the ability to lift 50 lbs, negotiate stairs, stand for extensive periods of time, and will have a professional manner, possess excellent organizational skills, have compassion, and a basic understanding of the dynamics of domestic violence and/or trauma. Must possess the following current/valid checks and certification:
1. Food Safe Certificate

2. Familiarity with Provincial Health Standards and Canada Food Guide

3. Criminal Record Check

4. Child Welfare Check

5. First Aid and CPR Certificate

6. WHMIS training is an asset

**RESPONSIBILITIES**

**A. FOOD SERVICE**

1. Plan a menu for the Shelter which meets current Canada Food Guide health and nutrition standard requirements, ensuring cultural and dietary requirements are provided for.

2. Prepare meals to be served while on shift and pre-make meals to be served by other staff for off-shift times.

3. Follow Food Safe standards & guidelines for the proper handling, maintenance and storage of all foods and food preparation equipment.

4. Participate in Health Inspections.

5. Give direction and assistance to kitchen volunteers as required.

6. Rotate food stock to ensure foods are utilized before due dates.

7. Assist with food preparation for special events or groups as required.

**B. Cleaning**

1. Responsible for daily cleaning of working areas, including the kitchen, appliances and food pantries.

2. Follow a designated daily, weekly and monthly cleaning schedule

3. Removal of garbage and recycling from the kitchen and food pantries..

4. Other cleaning as required relevant to the position

**C. WHMIS**

1. Maintain the proper storage and mixture of all required chemicals

2. Maintain and record, and update itemized charts of chemicals
- **Administrative & Service Responsibilities**

1. Maintain confidentiality as expressed in the Human Resource policy of the Society.

2. Act in accordance with all policies and practices of the Shelter and the Society at all times.

3. Maintain positive, courteous and professional demeanour when representing the organization in the community.

4. Submit a time-sheet in a timely manner

5. Maintain and update cleaning checklists as required.

6. Prepare and submit grocery shopping lists.

7. Participate as an effective team member with Shelter staff, volunteers, practicum students and leadership

8. Make a consistent effort to remain up-to-date with current knowledge and skills in pertinent areas.

9. Work closely with all Departments to best meet the needs of the clients

10. Other duties as required by the Family Support Coordinator or Executive Director.

**Job Type**: Part-time

Pay: $17.31-$20.65 per hour
