Student Services Counsellor

Our Senior School Counsellors are experts in understanding current university admissions trends and academic expectations and are deeply conversant with contemporary post-secondary programs around the world. In addition, they are passionate about ensuring students build the confidence and resilience to know themselves well, and to navigate a wide range of local and global opportunities seamlessly.

**Specific Accountabilities**:
**University Counselling**
- In collaboration with other departmental experts, fosters a strong, contemporary post-secondary counselling program that develops students decision-making skills and fosters independence
- Provides course selection counselling that aligns with the students’ university choices
- Provides training and support to faculty in the preparation of compelling letters of recommendation
- Establishes relationships and liaises with university admissions offices in person and electronically as a professional, articulate advocate of the School
- Helps build the school’s reputation in the national and international arenas
- Experience in international universities, especially within the United Kingdom and the Unites States of America
- Researches and is aware of current trends and university entrance expectations and actively keeps on top of changing requirements
- Visits other schools to look at best practices
- Other related responsibilities as required
- Embeds diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging values into all activities
- Commits to the Staff/Faculty Growth and Evaluation Process
- Other responsibilities as required

**Social Emotional**
- Consults and works with teachers in championing students’ learning by fostering strategies for success for both students and teachers
- Counsels individually and in groups
- Possesses a deep understanding of student’s emotional and social development
- Builds meaningful relationships with students and their families
- Reads, interprets, communicates and implements IEPs in order to ensure academic support and accommodations exist where required including both the classroom and for standardized testing (PSAT, SAT, ACT) in collaboration with the Learning Support Specialists.
- Engages in problem-solving and coaches students to develop their executive functioning skills
- Provides educational seminars for students and parents on social emotional learning

**Skills, Experience and Attributes**:

- Ontario Teaching Certificate and Guidance qualifications
- Equivalent university or independent school admissions experience
- Experience in an academic counselling, student-wellbeing or post-secondary admissions office specializing in post secondary planning/counseling
- Expertise in Canadian, American, British and other international locations admissions requirements and processes
- Solid understanding of and extensive experience working with Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) Ontario Student Records (OSR) and Ontario Student Transcript (OST) requirements
- Strong expertise and experience working with Naviance, OUAC, UCAS, Common Application, Electronic Information and Scholarships
- Understanding of the developmental, social/emotional and educational needs of senior school students
- Strong technology background in supporting effective communication in a laptop environment as well as an understanding of adolescent interactions with technology and social media
- Understanding of _Growing Success_ and current practices of assessment and evaluation
- A demonstrated passion for innovation and creativity in education
- Demonstrated ability to take initiative, multi-task, adapt to change and work under pressure in a highly rigorous educational setting
- Strong innovative thinking, problem solving and organizational skills
- Exceptional interpersonal skills with the proven ability to develop relationships and a caring rapport with students and their families and teachers
- Expertise in developing and facilitating student and parent workshops
- Commitment to participate as a collaborative member in all aspects of the department, school and in school life
- Passion and desire to continually learn about the changing dynamic landscape of post secondary education
