Public Works Operator

Reporting to the Roads Superintendent, this position will perform maintenance and repair of storm sewer systems, road curbs, gutters and sidewalks, culverts, and bridges; operate all heavy trucks, vehicles, construction equipment related to Public Works operations and perform facility maintenance.

**Typical Responsibilities**
- Inspect, maintain and perform repair of storm sewer systems, road infrastructure, sidewalks, potholes, and road shoulders which may include paving and spreading asphalt
- Use of heavy equipment to perform a variety of tasks which may include: preparing roads for resurfacing, street sweeping, grading roads, culvert installation, ditching, grass cutting, road shouldering
- Use of small hand tools to perform a variety of tasks which may including, hand shovels, rakes, saws, tampers, grinders, welders, paint machine
- Perform winter control procedures which includes sanding, salting, snow removal
- Assist in resolving drainage issues, felling and chipping of trees, topsoil repair
- Maintenance of the Public Works facilities and grounds
- Pick up debris, brush, refuse etc. from municipal roads allies, and sidewalks
- Pick up and dispose of deceased animals from Town of Essex roadways
- Perform janitorial duties in the Public Works buildings
- Create, repair and install traffic signs as assigned
- Remove garbage and clean sidewalks in urban area containers
- Work in a collaborative manner with employees of other Town of Essex departments (Water, Community Services, etc.)
- Maintenance and minor repairs of Public Works equipment which may include changing plow blades, tightening conveyor chains, grease equipment, sharpening blades, replace windshield wiper blades and general cleaning and inspecting of equipment,
- Maintaining log books as required
- Other duties as assigned

**Skills and Qualifications**
- Minimum Grade 12 high school graduation
- Completion of additional post-secondary education and certification related to the operation of heavy equipment of at minimum the follow: excavator, loader and backhoe or the completion of a Heavy Equipment Operator Apprenticeship Program
- Valid DZ driver’s license
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience in heavy equipment operations with including operation of heavy truck, tractors, backhoes, graders, sweepers, and snow removal equipment
- Experience and proficiency utilizing the following shall be considered an asset:

- Construction laser level
- Paving and the use of paving equipment
- Working knowledge of requirements as per Book 7 - Ontario Traffic Manual
- Knowledge and experience in the construction of sidewalks, curbs and gutters, installation and repair of storm sewer systems, ditching, and grading
- Ability to work cooperatively and effectively in a team environment as well as independently
- Strong communications skills (oral and written)
- Must have the ability to provide a clean three (3) year drivers abstract
