Assessment accommodation

**Duties**:
The Marine Ecotoxicology team of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) is based out of the Pacific Science Enterprise Centre in West Vancouver, British Columbia. The team conducts research on contaminants in marine ecosystems with focus on Canada’s endangered and contaminated whales, the Southern Resident Killer Whale and the St. Lawrence Estuary Beluga, and their food webs to provide information and advice to policy and management sectors for conservation. Understanding contaminant exposure and sources along with associated toxicological effects will aid in the ability to put protective measures in place.
Objectives of the position:
- Preparing and processing samples of invertebrate, fish and marine mammal tissues for the analyses of contaminants such as Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs)
- Data processing of contaminants in invertebrate, fish and beluga tissue
- Statistical analyses of contaminant data to assess tissue burdens in beluga and prey across two ecosystems.
- Extended stays in remote field locations
- Defend research, internally in DFO and/or externally at meetings/conferences.
- Data analysis, interpretation, and publication in government reports and peer-reviewed journals.

Education
- Currently enrolled in a Masters of Science program at Simon Fraser University in Biological Sciences or Environment and Geography.
Degree equivalency
Experience
- Experience conducting laboratory work, or field research experience.
- Experience in analyzing data including performing statistics.
- Experience using coding statistical software (e.g. R, matlab).
- Experiencing writing scientific reports or manuscripts.
