Victoria, Canada Victoria Cool Aid Society Full time

The Recreational and Life Skills Assistant (RLSA) will work collaboratively with the Downtown Community Centre (DCC) team to assist in the provision of programs and services to our diverse client population. The RLSA will participate in helping to support current programs and services at the DCC, have the opportunity to develop and deliver a program of interest, as well as assist individuals with the various supports and resources they request during their time at the DCC. Activities delivered focus on daily social engagement and recreational opportunities at no cost to participants. A crucial part of this role is to assist in maintaining a welcoming, safe and inclusive space for all participants, including individuals who often face poverty, housing instability or homelessness, mental health and/or substance use challenges, and/or other health, economic or social barriers in their lives.

- Develop supportive, working relationships with our diverse client populations.
- Increase understanding and awareness of poverty, homelessness, mental health and substance use, stigma and marginalization and its impact on individuals and community.
- Acquire skills in active and reflective listening skills, communication, problem solving and conflict resolution, de-escalation techniques, etc.
- Program development and facilitation.
- Team work and collaboration.
- Increase knowledge of other community service agencies and resources within Greater Victoria

This position would not be available without the financial assistance of the Canada Summer Jobs program and would not otherwise be created.

**Eligibility and Education**

**We are seeking applicants**:

- Working toward a degree or certification in social work, nursing, psychology, therapeutic recreation, or a related field.
- With interest, and some experience, familiarity and comfort level working with our client population.
- Between the ages of 19 and 30 years of age.
- Legally entitled to work in Canada.
- Legally entitled to work according to the relevant BC provincial regulations.
- Can submit to the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General Criminal Record Check.

**Position Information**
- ** Hourly Wage Rate **$21.20
- ** Work Location **755 Pandora Street - DCC
- ** Work Term **May/June - August
- ** Work Days **Monday to Friday.
- ** Shift Time **8:00am to 4:00pm.
- ** Total Weekly Hours** 30.
- ** Job Type**:Temporary Canada Summer Jobs.
