**Responsibilities**:
- Provides academic and career advising to undergraduate students at the University of Winnipeg using a developmental advising model.
- Supports and guides students in planning and decision making related to their educational and career goals.
- Supports academic needs of regular, probationary, conditional, mature and not allowed to continue status students.
- Provides interpretation and clarification related to university policies, procedures, regulations and terminology.
- Provides current students with accurate and appropriate information related to course, major, degree and graduation requirements in all B.A., B.Sc., B.B.A., B. Ed., B.Kin and BPHE programs.
- Guides students in navigating the registration process and provides direction in the utilization of WebAdvisor and Student Planning tools.
- Counsels and advises students on decisions related to selection, scheduling and adding/dropping of courses, and selection or changes of majors and minors.
- Authorizes late registrations, course overloads, medical or other types of withdrawals as well as academic plans of probationary students, based on knowledge of Senate guidelines and student needs.
- Monitors students’ academic progress and assists students with strategies for academic success.
- Evaluates barriers to learning and applies knowledge of campus resources to suggest services such as study skills workshops, writing classes, or tutoring which may be beneficial for students.
- Provides advice, assessment and mentoring to students in the areas of career exploration, planning and development.
- Offers first-level employment preparation advising and feedback in the areas of resume writing, job search strategies, interview skills and labour market information.
- Provides guidance on career options related to various areas of study.
- Assesses student concerns and supports students in resolving issues, problems or conflicts either through formal channels or informally; advocates on behalf of students as necessary.
- Provides first level counselling and support to students and refers to UWinnipeg Counselling Services, Accessibility Services or other specialized services when appropriate.
- May be called upon to represent the University at Open House and other related events on campus or in the community.
- Collaborates with other Academic and Career Advisors in the planning, organization and coordination of the annual University of Winnipeg Career Fair, and other related events.
- Organizes the Volunteer Fair or similar events and sets up information sessions/booths requested by external employers for recruitment purposes.
- Develops and facilitates presentations and materials for students about job search, interview skills and career exploration and related topics.
- Assists with website management and updates.
- Counsels students on the preparation of documentation and collection of evidence related to all types of appeals.
- Researches, prepares and presents individual student appeals for the Senate Sub-committee on appeals.
- Participates in the discussion and decision making process on the Senate Appeals Sub-committee.
- Performs other related duties as required or assigned.
**Qualifications**:
- Undergraduate degree in a related discipline or equivalent.
- At least 3 years of directly related academic or career advising experience or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Experience in developing new student programming, presentations and workshops.
- Knowledge of B.A., B.Sc., B.B.A., B. Ed., B.Kin and BPHE degree programs and graduation requirements.
- Knowledge of the labour market and educational requirements for various jobs.
- Knowledge of or the ability to learn the online registration system.
- Familiar with Student Services procedures, Senate regulations and University policy.
- Comfortable working with students from various backgrounds and demonstrated sensitivity to the needs and concerns of students.
- Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to develop supportive, professional relationships with students and with external employers seeking to hire students.
- Strong written and oral communication skills with ability to explain detailed information warmly and clearly, as well as experience facilitating engaging presentations.
- Strong assessment skills to understand student interests, aptitudes and goals.
- Ability to collaboratively plan and problem solve to address a range of student issues and make appropriate referrals to a variety of resources.
- Ability to take initiative and research current trends and best practices in academic and career advising.
- Ability to be effective in a collaborative Advising team environment and work co-operatively with members of Student Services and the University community.
