The primary function of this position is supervision, either shift supervision in a 12-hour, 24/7 environment or day work supervision. This position will also perform the functions of the Transmission System Operator position.
**Accountabilities**
- Ensure safe working conditions for supervised staff and direct supervised staff in safe practices
- Responsible for knowing the capabilities and limitations of the staff under their direction.
- Responsible for seeing that the actions of supervised staff are not creating hazards to the public or othe groups.
- Responsible for the implementation of safety programs outlined by immediate supervisor/manager.
- Initiate timely corrective action on any unsafe conditions brought to their attention.
- Responsible for conducting safety meetings when required.
- Endeavour to motivate supervised persons towards the proper safety attitude.
- Be responsible for seeing that the quality of work performed by supervised staff under their supervisors consistent with Corporation and operating standards and recognize where Utility Work Protection Code requirements are applicable.
- Make recommendations on quality, standards and control.
- Make effective use of supervised staff and equipment under his/her supervision to obtain acceptable output of work.
- Create proper attitude by own example.
- Perform duties as assigned in the ‘mentoring program’.
- Ensure that the performance of supervised staff is satisfactory on the job by taking initial actions to correct performance deficiencies.
- Assist supervisor/manager in staff planning and development of supervised staff.
- Be alert to training needs of supervised staff and provide on the job training to meet the needs of the assigned work.
- Responsible for conducting training meetings with supervised staff as requested.
- Report to supervisor/manager on progress of training in supervised staff and recommend further training required.
- Responsible for removing an employee from the work situation for a serious infraction of conduct or rules but must report the occurrence to his/her supervisor/manager immediately. Where possible, contact supervisor/manager for instructions.
- Assist supervisor/manager in controlling expenses incurred by supervised staff on behalf of the Corporation. (e.g. meals)
- Report to their supervisor/manager all or recurring infractions which would normally incur disciplinary action.
- Be aware of problems developing in supervised staff, report them to supervisor/manager and assist in resolving by providing advice and guidance.
- Acquire and maintain a good knowledge of supervised staff concerning skills, ability and temperament so that they may assess their capabilities for performing the work assigned.
- Be alert to indications of personal problems that may affect the performance of supervised staff.
- Stimulate job interest and loyalty to the Corporation.
- Ensure that members of supervised staff practice good public relations.
- Set good personal example for supervised staff and team.
- Endeavor to ensure that proper tools and equipment are available and are in satisfactory working condition. Assist supervisor/manager by assessing needs for additional and/or improved tools, systems, processes or equipment necessary for expediting and increasing the efficiency and safety of the work environment.
- Plan assigned jobs to produce efficient use of assigned staff and equipment. Assist the Supervisor/manager with planning of complex or longer duration activities. Plan the necessary details of tasks previously laid out.
- Endeavor to ensure that all necessary drawings, information, systems, processes and Corporation supplied tools for assigned jobs are available, properly used, and returned.
- Ensure that supervised staff has an understanding of the work at hand, e.g. shift turnover and status update meetings.
- Co-ordinate the activities of supervised staff with other staff and distribution operations staff for the most efficient job completion.
- Co-operate with other organizations, customers or the public in planning the sequence of their activities.
- Assign work to individuals according to their ability to do the work.
- Generally the supervisor will attempt to fill vacant shifts created by employee absence. The Company will provide guidance on principles to be utilized in making these decisions.
- Assign tools and equipment to staff as required.
- Assist the Supervisor/manager in preparing oral or written appraisals of supervised staff under their jurisdiction.
