House Assistant: Canada Summer Student Job Grant for Young Canadians

L’Arche Association of Calgary is seeking a dedicated student to fill the role of Canada Summer Student Job Grant: House Assistant, for seven (7) weeks, forty (40) hours/week, for 280 hours. The start date/end date can be flexible. In this role, your primary duty is to support people with developmental disabilities in their daily lives. This may include helping each individual gain new life skills and relational opportunities, creating a home, maintaining safe, clean, comfortable environments, household and yard maintenance, meal preparation, cleaning, helping with shopping, etc.
In this role, you will NOT assume the full responsibility of an Assistant (for example, you will NOT drive, provide personal care to people with developmental disabilities, attend medical appointments, etc.).
**Skills to be Demonstrated**
- Commitment to the Vision and Mission of L’Arche as outlined in the International Charter of L’Arche and Mandate of L’Arche Calgary.
- Ability to develop healthy, respectful, and appropriate relationships of mutuality with persons with disabilities and all other people in the Community.
- Ability to maintain a familiar, comfortable, and culturally appropriate environment for persons with developmental disabilities.
- Must maintain confidentiality.
- Must foster a welcoming atmosphere for all living, working, and visiting the home.
**Qualifications**
- Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the summer employment period.
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment** and **International students are not eligible participants. As the objective of the CSJ program is to support youth entering the Canadian labour market, the temporary nature of an international student's time in Canada does not allow for a long-term connection to the labour market.
- Genuine desire to understand and participate in the mission and vision of L’Arche.
- Experience with persons with developmental disabilities is an asset.
- First Aid/CPR Certification is an asset.
- Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
- Satisfactory Police Information Check (vulnerable sector).
- Available for 7 weeks, 280 hours in total.
- 40 hours/week.
**Responsibilities**
You will be fully trained and not work alone. You will not do personal care (toileting, bathing, washing, brushing teeth/hair, flossing, changing adult disposable briefs, etc. by yourself; another assistant might assist you.
