Lumber Yard Worker

**Maintaining Inventory**
A lumberyard worker sorts and stacks lumber based on size and type so that the customer can easily find the lumber he needs. Because of the physical nature of the job, the lumberyard worker must be physically fit and able to lift heavy loads. He also oversees the maintenance and cleanliness of the lumberyard, ensuring that stacks of wood stay neat and that the yard has a clean appearance. As shipments of new lumber come into the yard, the worker unloads the trucks and places the lumber in the correct spots in the yard or stacks it up out of the way to sort through and put away later.
**Assisting Customers**
When a new customer visits the lumberyard, the worker answers the customer's questions and shows him where to find what he needs. The lumberyard worker educates a customer on the best type of lumber for that customer’s project needs. After a customer finds what he needs, the worker loads up the lumber into the customer’s vehicle and writes up the customer’s bill. Some lumberyards have the means to staff a separate cashier to ring up a customer’s order and take the customer’s money, while in other lumberyards, the worker takes care of ringing up the customer
**Performing Miscellaneous Jobs**
A lumberyard worker runs the saws, forklifts and other equipment and must adhere to all safety rules and regulations. In lumberyards that do not have a sales clerk or other administrative position, the lumberyard worker answers the phones, responding to customer inquiries. Other duties include throwing out damaged pieces of wood and cutting wood, pipe and other materials to a customer’s specifications.
**Managing the Lumberyard**
Some lumberyards employ a yard foreman. Along with fulfilling some of the same duties as regular lumberyard workers, such as making sure lumber stays in stock and answering customer questions, he oversees the other lumberyard workers. Additional duties the foreman takes on include assigning duties to lumberyard workers and maintaining lumberyard equipment such as forklifts and saws. He orders new lumber as needed from suppliers. He also trains new lumberyard workers on the company’s protocols and procedures.
