Job Summary
The Masters of Data Science in Computational Linguistics (MDS-CL) is a specialization within the Masters of Data Science program at UBC. This is a professional, applied master's program.
This position provides administrative management and operational oversight for the Master of Data Science - Computational Linguistics program. Key responsibilities include developing and managing budgets, implementation of academic projects and initiatives and overseeing the day-to-day operations of the MDS-CL.
Organizational Status
The Program Administrator reports to the Manager of Administration and works closely with the MDS-CL Program Director. Works collaboratively as a member of the Department of Linguistics staff team. Liaises with other UBC units that serve graduate students including the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, MDS Vancouver and MDS Okanagan program staff, Faculty of Science Dean's office, and the Arts Dean's Office. The incumbent collaborates and meets regularly with faculty and staff in addition to other M&P administrators in the MDS Vancouver program within the Faculty of Science, working collegially with them to share and develop best practices.
Work Performed
- Manages the operational and administrative functions of MDS-CL.
- Develops, manages and evaluates the human and financial resources, systems, policies and procedures for the program.
- Manages all University operations within the Program, ensuring that financial and administrative decisions are based upon sound business practice and accounting principles.
- Develops and manages program budget, oversees and authorizes program expenditures and financial transactions.
- Collaborates with the Director and instructional team on strategic planning for MDS-CL. Manages the administration and delivery of the MDS-CL courses.
- Manages the program's course schedule within the course scheduling system and ensuring curriculum is in line with program and department priorities.
- Develops, implements and manages new and ongoing initiatives and processes to benefit overall MDS programs. Manages and oversees special projects.
- Manages the hiring process for Sessional Instructors, Postdoctoral Teaching Fellows, and Teaching Assistants.
- Develops reports, terms of reference, and other documentation for MDS-CL.
- Coordinates a small team, including management and student staff, and provides direction to other department staff supporting the MDS CL.
- Delegates MDS-CL-related tasks to support staff and oversees their progress.
- Develops and plans program's Work Learn opportunities, including development and submission of project proposals, and recruitment, appointment and management of student employees.
- Develops and enhances relations with faculty and staff in the MDS program, other campus departments, and within the Faculty of Arts, as well as external community partners or organizations.
- Contributes to the department’s Curriculum Committee and provides guidance on ongoing curriculum development and revisions for the Program.
- Provides advice to Program Director on the investigation and processes for academic misconduct.
- Manages and monitors confidential student data, such as academic misconduct, evaluation marks, etc.
- Develops and evaluates effectiveness of program and events and makes recommendations for future improvements. Identifies areas where program and services would support and enhance student academic success and engagement
- Oversees Marketing and communications for the MDS-CL program. Collaborates with other MDS programs and external marketing professionals to develop strategies and budgets.
- Works closely with the MDS Marketing Coordinator to develop MDS-CL specific content.
