Job Description Summary
The Manager, International Student Experience is responsible for advancing the University’s goals regarding the retention, learning and wellbeing of international students at UBC Vancouver by overseeing the conceptualization and development of multiple and comprehensive programs and initiatives supporting students with international experience. This includes oversight of existing key signature programs (such as Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program and the World University Services Canada Refugee Program) as well as the strategic development and design of several new programs, systems and initiatives that serve emerging needs as well as foster a better understanding of the barriers facing students, particularly at-risk scholars, with international experience. The Manager is responsible for leading a team in the development and delivery of a complex constellation of initiatives and programs that requires the incumbent to draw upon resources across campus, leverage the capacities of others to create those resources where they do not exist, support the ongoing development and operationalization of a strategy and vision for what is to be achieved, and continue to work toward a changed culture inside and outside the University.
Will have an office on the UBC Point Grey campus. Occasional evening and weekend work will be required. International travel may be required.
Organizational Status
International Student Development (ISD) provides a wide range programming and services supporting the full participation/integration of students with international experience in all aspects of university life throughout their time at UBC Vancouver. Reporting to the Director, International Student Development, the incumbent supervises and mentors staff, who support students with international experience and works collaboratively with the UBC community and key stakeholders to meet the University’s commitment to supporting these students. They work collaboratively with colleagues within the Vice President, Students portfolio, International Student Initiative (ISI) and Enrolment Services, Faculties, Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, student organizations, the AMS/GSS, and other units and departments across the University. The Manager is the primary liaison with the Mastercard Foundation, Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program network institutions and with the UBC Development staff affiliated with these initiatives.
The Manager may also take on leadership roles in cross-functional team projects and may supervise student interns seeking a student development work experience.
Work Performed
- Develops and operationalizes a comprehensive strategy to achieve vision, goals, and targets. Draws on and activates resources across campus to support the development and operationalization of this strategy.
- Develops and leads the coordination and facilitation of multiple programs and educational initiatives, forums, presentations, lectures and workshops to all levels of the University community with the goal of enhancing the experiences of students with international experience. Leads the ongoing evaluation of these offerings in order to identify potential gaps in order to improve and innovate.
- Develops new systems, guidelines, best practices and policies across all programs, ensuring consistency across all programming and alignment to strategic vision and plans
- Develops and implements organizational change strategies that promote meaningful participation in all aspects of university life for students with international experience.
