Night-shift Lab Assistant Manager

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Lab Engineering, as an Assistant Manager on the Night Shift, you will provide overall leadership for the lab support team onsite in Ottawa. The night shifts range from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., 12 a.m. to 8 a.m. and/or 2 a.m. to 10 a.m., affording first level support to offshore customers (primarily the Product Verification and Software Design teams in India) within the Ciena labs. Your hours of work and holidays will follow the standard India work week and statutory holiday calendar observed in that country.

Duties include:

- Manages a work group(s) of non-exempt employees and may coordinate professional staff
- Assigns tasks, sets clear objectives and monitors processes and results
- Provide comprehensive feedback to staff
- Instruct employees on procedures / training and mentoring for new employees
- Recommends appropriate skills training to enhance employee effectiveness
- Theoretical issues from professional staff
- Works with manager to set objectives of the team
- Work time spent assisting project/program/people managers
- Acts as project manager/team lead/mentor
- Establishes new processes/procedures
- Works with manager to set objectives of the team

- Provides operational reports to senior management

Daily work activities include:

- Answer the Lab Support line, addressing in lab support requests and basic trouble shooting of lab equipment including Infrastructure and equipment under design or test.
- You will provide support for all issues originating from the lab user community, including but not limited to:

- Reconfiguring of Ciena Optical systems based on detailed information and/or drawings provided by system owners or project primes
- Investigation and resolution of network infrastructure including ethernet connectivity and terminal server/serial port access on all lab equipment
- Investigation and resolution of basic computing issues, test equipment and signal source issues.
- Installation of software loads SW on Ciena equipment
- Troubleshooting and repair of failed circuit packs
- Provide guidance to the lab user community on lab processes
- Locate equipment within the lab, including installation, removal, relocation, inventory and equipment maintenance.
- Run, connect, clean, troubleshoot optical fibers
- Maintenance of accurate records of specific details of all support requests.

The Must Haves:

- Minimum College Diploma as a Technician coupled with proven experience in R&D lab management and support organizations.
- Post secondary training and job-related training with 6+ years related work experience
- Equivalent combination of education and experience
- Extensive knowledge of R&D lab environments
- Strong working knowledge of Ciena Optical Products would be beneficial.
- Working knowledge of corporate tools such as JIRA and GEMS would be beneficial.
- Ability to work core India hours, 11pm-7am EST., and other shifts as required, following Ciena India work schedule, and vacation times is mandatory.

Pay Range:
The annual pay range for this position in Canada is $75, 800 - $121, 200
A night-shift premium will also be added to the pay.

Non-Sales employees may be eligible for a discretionary incentive bonus, while Sales employees may be eligible for a sales commission.
