- PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The Native Women’s Association of Canada (NWAC) is a National Indigenous Organization representing the political voice of Indigenous Women, girls, Two-Spirit, transgender, and gender-diverse people in Canada, inclusive of First Nations on and off reserve, status, and non-status, disenfranchised, Métis, and Inuit. NWAC was founded on the collective goal to enhance, promote, and foster the social, economic, cultural, and political well-being of Indigenous women, girls, Two-Spirit, transgender, and gender-diverse people within their respective communities and Canadian societies.
SUMMARY
The Manager, Human Resources (HR) is responsible to maintain and enhance the organization’s human resources by planning, implementing and evaluating employee relations and human resource policies, programs and practices.
The HR Manager will work under the authority and supervision of the Chief Operations Officer COO).
RESPONSIBILITIES
The Manager, Human Resources will:
- Maintain management guidelines by preparing, updating, and recommending human resource policies and procedures;
- Develop and implement HR strategies and initiatives aligned with the overall organization strategy;
- Bridge management and employee relations by addressing demands, complaints or other issues;
- Ensure legal compliance by monitoring and implementing applicable human resource federal or provincial requirements;
- Maintain the work structure by updating job requirements and job descriptions for all positions;
- Maintain employee benefits programs and inform employees of benefits by studying and assessing benefit needs and trends;
- Ensure planning and monitoring of employees’ performance appraisals;
- Manage the recruitment and selection process;
- Conduct interviews including exit interviews;
- Plan and implement a pay structure revision;
- Assist with payroll issues, when required;
- Establishing and conducting training programs;
- Manage the day-to-day operations of the unit;
- Responsible for overall supervision of the HR Unit reporting to you;
- Manage the workload of the unit;
- Review quality of work to ensure high standards are met by the unit;
- Respond to leave requests, timesheet approval;
- Undertake probationary reviews and annual performance evaluation;
- Handle other human resource issues as they arise;
- Engage in conflict resolution if required;
- Act as a mentor and coach staff to promote professional development;
- Schedule and ensure regular unit meetings and bilateral meetings;
- Meet with NWAC Directors as required;Other duties as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- University or college degree in Human Resources;
- Human Resource Designation in good standing required (CHRP, CHRL);
- Minimum of seven (7) years of experience in human resources;
- Experience with NGOs, organizations, interest groups and government or government agencies or business/corporate entities;
- Experience working within a unionized environment;
- Relevant experience working or volunteering with Indigenous peoples, groups, or organizations is an asset;
- Experience in managing a diverse workforce;
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge
The Manager, Human Resources must have proficient knowledge in the following areas:
- In-depth knowledge of Canadian labour law and HR best practices;
- Knowledge of Quebec specific labour laws and requirements considered a strong asset;
- Knowledge of leadership and management principles and practices;
- Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous Peoples in Canada, their cultures, histories and traditions;
- Understanding and knowledge of Indigenous issues, and norms and standards relevant to promotion and protection of Indigenous women’s rights;
- Some knowledge of key issues impacting Indigenous women and girls in Canada;
- Some understanding of social policy (including violence prevention and impacts, housing, etc.);
- Ability and availability to work overtime hours; and
Skills & Abilities
- Excellent writing and communication skills in English and French is essential.
- Writing and verbal communication in an Indigenous language is considered a strong asset;
- Strong writing and verbal communication skills;

- Ability to supervise a team;
- Ability to prioritize, multi-task and organize work effectively and under pressure;
- Ability to handle highly confidential and sensitive information;
