**Description of Work**:
This is an equipment operator position and the incumbent will be responsible to operate a variety of pieces of equipment, including, but not limited to a backhoe. Working with considerable independence, an incumbent in this position is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the equipment to which he is assigned. This work is physical in nature and will require physical effort and agility to perform some of the tasks assigned.

An incumbent in this position will normally work within Engineering Operations. The incumbent will be responsible for the safe positioning, set up and operation of the equipment operated. When assistance is necessary, the incumbent will be responsible for assisting the crew for productivity and adherence to policy, procedures and standards.

The incumbent must work in all types of weather conditions and be physically fit to perform heavy manual work in a variety of work situations. During inclement weather or when equipment operation assignments are not available, the incumbent will be required to perform other tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

The incumbent must be skilled in the safe operation of a variety of pieces of equipment and must ensure that all regulations pertaining to equipment operation are followed. An incumbent must have the ability to carry out written and oral instructions, have the ability to understand written procedures and manuals, and complete paperwork clearly and legibly. The work of the incumbent is reviewed by a supervisor for adherence to safe work procedures, productivity and conformance to acceptable standards and procedures. An incumbent receives advice and direction from a supervisor to sort out conflicting priorities and other non-routine issues.

**Examples of Work**:
An incumbent will perform a variety of tasks including, but not limited to, the following:

- Operates a backhoe or mini-excavator engaged in a number of functions including, but not limited to, excavating
- Completes daily paper work such as time cards, internal work requests and codes material slips to correct work orders.
- Follow W.C.B. regulations and all safe work procedures.
- Ensures crew productivity and adherence to policies and procedures.

**Required Licences, Certificates, and Registrations**:

- A valid driver’s licence for the Province of British Columbia is a requirement for this position (minimum Class 5)
- Possession of a current recognized Backhoe Certificate.
