West Vancouver Fire & Rescue is looking for a team-oriented individual with extensive Fire Department related experience to join our exempt management team as an Assistant Fire Chief.

Reporting to the Deputy Fire Chief, the Assistant Fire Chief is responsible for:

- Operations and planning, training and development of firefighters, fire prevention and fire investigation, and managing and delivering emergency services;
- Assists with building an inclusive department with a focus on equity, diversity and employee engagement;
- Performing administrative duties, which will include preparing reports;
- Assuming command during major emergency incidents as the Duty Chief or second on-call Chief;
- Liaising with other Municipal departments, external agencies, community groups and the public;
- Participates in employee and labour relations matters;
- Performing the role of Deputy Chief or Fire Chief in their absence as required; and,
- Any other duties at the discretion of the Fire Chief.

Assistant Fire Chiefs are assigned to a division (Fire Prevention & Public Education, Professional Development & Training, or Operations) at the discretion of the Fire Chief, based on the needs of the department with consideration given to each individual’s strengths and interests.

Preferred supplemental relevant post-secondary education includes: an undergraduate degree or diploma, Municipal Administrative Certificate, or completion of Fire Executive Officer Program. Successful applicants who have not completed a preferred education program will be required to successfully complete an executive development program as a condition of employment.

To facilitate reasonable response times, exempt first on-call staff living boundaries include any developed area of the North Shore with paved road access, the area north to Lions Bay; and the downtown peninsula of Vancouver. Any change to the living boundaries for on call responsibilities may be considered at the Fire Chief’s discretion.

Position Status:

- Exempt - Permanent, Full-Time

Hours of Work:

- 35 hours per week (on average - hours and days of work may vary). Standby and on-call coverage will also be required.

Rate of Pay:

- $153,662 - $166,184 per annum (2024 rates of pay)
