Course Description: Journalists sometimes struggle to establish trust and rapport in their own communities. The course introduces students to community-centred journalism practice, which includes actively and ethically engaging community organizations, groups, and/or individuals using collaborative and trust-building approaches. Students will also use Solutions Journalism, an evidence-based practice, to report on community-based stories. The course immerses students in texts and discussions that require careful consideration of where trust, advocacy, objectivity, and solutions fit into contemporary journalism practice.

**JOUR 2740 - Visual Journalism I**:

Course Description: Student journalists in this course will develop and produce video
- and photo-based news stories involving extensive practice in all facets of the story generation and production process. Work done in lectures and tutorials will focus on the goals and principles of digital media storytelling in the context of current journalism practice and contemporary technology.

**Qualifications**:

Course-specific experience required:

- Ability to teach intermediate equipment and production, such as Adobe Premiere Pro, video camera operations, lighting, audio recording and editing, and digital camera operation for photography in the form of aperture priority, shutter priority and manual photography modes.

Experience preferred:

- Journalism audio and video editorial experience.

- Instruction: course delivery including preparation of course outlines, other course materials, course activities, lesson preparation and assessments, and course learning management systems.

The Faculty of Business, Communication Studies & Aviation comprises the Bissett School of Business, the School of Communication Studies and the Aviation Program. The Bissett School of Business offers a four-year Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree with majors in accounting, human resources, general management (with concentrations in innovation and entrepreneurship, social innovation). Students in the Bissett School of Business can take a four-year Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree. The Aviation Program is housed in the Department of International Business, Supply Chain and Aviation and offers a two-year Aviation Diploma and the newly launched four-year Bachelor of Aviation Management. Students in the School of Communications Studies take a four-year Bachelor of Communication Studies (BComms) and can pursue majors in Broadcast Media Studies, Information Design, Journalism and Public Relations.
