**Working for the Department of Cell Biology**

The Department of Cell Biology is committed to research excellence in modern cell biology. Our faculty members also teach at the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels to develop a new generation of exceptional investigators. The Department of Cell Biology is home to a diverse group of faculty members that are nationally and internationally recognized in multiple areas of experimental cell biology. The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry (FoMD) comprises 21 departments, supported by 7 research institutes and 6 core facilities providing state-of-the-art research infrastructure and expertise, including world-class Flow Cytometry and Cell Imaging Cores.

**Position Summary**

The person holding this position will be responsible for managing the daily research operations and providing programmatic support to the Principal Investigator. Such as:

- Planning research activities and providing research design for a project and/or program.
- Determining the most appropriate methodology in carrying out identified research goals.
- Designing experiments, data collection protocols, and standards.

Participating in the writing of research papers, the preparation of presentations and publications. The incumbent will also perform a variety of complex experiments, collect, organize and analyze research data. In addition, they will act as a resource person liaising with the department, other labs at U of A and external/international collaborating labs. Duties will include performing laboratory experiments and supervising/instructing others in the performance of those studies and maintaining equipment and instructing users in the safe operation of such equipment.

**Duties**

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

- Conducting complex research experiments
- Laboratory maintenance and service
- Provides leadership, supervises, and assigns experiments to available technicians when leading a project.
- Dissect fly tissues, particularly whole brain

**Minimum Qualifications**
- Postsecondary education in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Genetics, or Biochemistry (PhD strongly preferred)
- Practical demonstrated experience with the following research disciplines and techniques is considered essential: tissue culture, preferably Drosophila S2 cells, dsRNA-mediated RNAi in Drosophila S2 cells, Drosophila behavior assays (Activity Monitors), Drosophila feeding assays (e.g., FLIC assay), Drosophila dissections, flow cytometry, qPCR, RNAseq and single-cell RNAseq, fly food making, trouble-shooting experimental assays, luminescence assays in cells and flies, including the lumicycle 32 and the Berthold 96-well plate luminometer, cloning as well as building dicistronic expression vectors, and with Western blotting.

**Preferred Qualifications**
- At least 3 years of effective supervisory experience using advanced interpersonal and skills to effectively lead and supervise at least other unionized employee.
- Interpersonal skills necessary to facilitate interactions with a range of users including students, PDFs, PI's, and administrators
