**) Field Assignment Assistant, Renewable Resources Program (Tech Staff II).** This role resides in the Renewable Resources Department, which is composed of four programs including Fish, Wildlife and Recreation, Forest and Natural Area Management, and Ecological Restoration B.Sc and M.Sc.-
**Duties & Responsibilities**

**RESPONSIBILITIES***:

- Collaborates with faculty to support applied learning by helping to instruct students on the use of field equipment and safety procedures required in natural resource management.
- Responsible for management of field lab and safety equipment including reservations, managing, maintenance and repairs of the equipment.
- Arranges equipment calibration, repairs, exchanges, rentals as well as vehicle insurance.
- Plans and executes safe, effective, and efficient storage of field lab equipment and supplies;
- Uses, maintains, and updates an online equipment inventory and booking database. Procures and disposes of field lab equipment, materials, and tools in coordination with the faculty. Monitors supplies and maintains adequate quantities.
- Coordinates permit acquisitions for field trips and field research when necessary.
- Informs faculty when purchase orders are needed and prepares purchase requisitions.
- Recommends to Programs/Department the purchase of new equipment.
- Stays current on emerging technology and regulatory requirements, including changes to standards and regulations related to the lab equipment and supplies used in natural resource management.
- Researches, revises, and maintains the standards and quality of field lab procedures.
- Develops and maintains safe operating procedures for all equipment used by the department and instructs students on the safe operating procedures for all equipment used by the department.
- Maintains records of student training on safe operating procedures. Ensures only students trained on safe operating procedures are allowed usage of the equipment.
- When appropriate, conducts, in conjunction with instructor, tail gate safety meetings and acts as a first aid attendant during field labs.

**QUALIFICATIONS***:
**Minimum Qualifications**:

- Two (2) years’ experience as field technician in natural resource management plus one (1) additional year of post-secondary education or diploma of technology. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
- Superior interpersonal skills with the ability to work cooperatively and professionally and respectfully with students and instructors.
- Excellent organizational and record-keeping skills, including experience with filing systems (both digital and paper-based).
- Must be able to prioritize daily workload and possess good time management skills with ability to set and change priorities, and exercise sound judgment.
- Must be self-motivated, and able to make logical decisions. Understanding of unique needs, priorities, and challenges of educational institutions.
- Able to lift up to 30 pounds.
- Able to travel for one-day or multi-day field trips.
- Level 1 Occupational First-Aid certification.
- A valid BC Class 5 driver’s license is desired.

**Preferred Qualifications**:

- Experience in the natural resource industry and with the use of related equipment, such as chainsaws, digital mapping, small engines, boats, soil gear, environmental monitoring sensors, and associated equipment;
- Experience in natural resource measurement techniques, including assessment of soils, hydrology, water quality, plants, fish, and wildlife;
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot a variety of computer software, update software and licensing, and the ability to self-learn new systems;
- Class 4 driver’s license or and willingness to acquire within 6 months of start date;
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate in a large team setting.
