Job Description:
In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health), patient and staff safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone; as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

Reporting to the Manager or designate, the Leader, Child Life is responsible for the delivery of Child Life clinical and academic services consistent with the mission, vision, values, and strategic directions of Island Health. The Leader, Child Life directly provides practice leadership, participates in the planning, delivery, and evaluation of services, and provides input into human resource and financial resource management. The Leader, Child Life supports program leaders in decision-making processes surrounding care delivery, clinical competencies, clinical practice, and standards of care. The Leader, Child Life, acts as a patient advocate, functions as a member of the Child, Youth & Family (CYF) Department and as a member of an assigned health care team, in accordance with the professional standards of practice of the Child Life Council.

**QUALIFICATIONS**:
**Education, Training And Experience**:

- Bachelor's Degree in related field such as Child & Youth Care from a recognized program;
- Four (4) year's recent related experience including one (1) year of supervisory experience.
- Current Child Life Certification;
- Eligible for registration with the Association of Child Life Professionals (ACLP);

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

**Skills And Abilities**:

- Demonstrated ability to represent and communicate the role of Child Life to others.
- Broad knowledge of other health care disciplines and their role in patient care.
- Demonstrated ability to provide clinical supervision, work direction and guidance.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively consult with others, provide leadership and facilitate programs and/or service delivery.
- Demonstrated ability to plan, implement, lead and evaluate Child Life programs and services.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with patients and their families, colleagues, physicians, other health care staff, community service providers and the public.
- Demonstrated listening and information seeking skills that promote communication and lead to a co-operative approach to problem solving within an interdisciplinary setting.
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
- Demonstrated ability to problem solve, adjust to new or unexpected events, and to deal effectively with conflict situations.
- Demonstrated ability to establish workload priorities in collaboration with others in a complex health care environment.
- Demonstrated ability to recognize when referral to another health care professional is required.
- Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
- Skilled in the use of equipment and in the techniques appropriate for Child Life.
